Eye on China, India to send 10 locomotives to Bangladesh
India
Updated Jul 27, 2020 | 08:21 IST
India's move may be viewed against the recent telephonic conversation between Pakistan PM Imran Khan and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, wherein the former made a reference to Jammu and Kashmir.
New Delhi: India will be handing over 10 broad-gauge locomotives to Bangladesh in what is being viewed as a bid to renew economic and trade ties with the eastern neighbour. The handing over of locomotives is a part of an assistance programme which was promised by New Delhi during Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's visit to India in October 2019.
The locomotives will be handed over during a virtual ceremony that will be attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal and their respective counterparts from Bangladesh on Monday.
In what has also marked as a significant milestone in the maritime relations between the two countries, last week, the first shipment of container cargo from Kolkata reached Agartala via Chattogram port in Bangladesh.
In a Line of Credit, India has promised 17 railway projects to Bangladesh and according to reports, nine have been completed. The completed projects include the supply of signal equipment, locomotives, wagons, railway bridges besides others.
The 'China' angle in an Asian game
India's move comes at a time when Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has reached out to his Bangladeshi counterpart and made references to Kashmir. Days ago, Khan invited Hasina for a visit to Islamabad and interestingly, made references to Jammu and Kashmir, during his telephonic conversation.
Khan “stressed the importance of peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute for a safe and prosperous region” - Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
The mention of Jammu and Kashmir has raised eyebrows in New Delhi's diplomatic establishment and it is believed that China is behind the call between PM Khan and Sheikh Hasina.
The development may also be viewed against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Beijing over Galwan violence and the standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. At a time when the US has waged a full-fledged diplomatic war against China, asking that country to shut down the consulate in Houston and urging the world to stand against Beijing, China has been actively reaching out to neighbours and allies.
While Pakistan remains an 'all-weather' ally of Beijing, as claimed by the two countries, the recent political turmoil in Nepal, wherein PM KP Sharma Oli made harsh remarks against India, are also believed to have a China-connection.
