Exports to India hits record high

It is especially good for India when India exports $16 billion worth of goods to BD and India's great friends @UKBengali and his twin brother Alga Momen (FM) both praise India for accepting a tiny $2 billion worth of goods from BD.

Jay Hindustan, Joy Bangladesh!!! No wonder, India wants Hasina to remain in power till 2141 and beyond.

Let not forget that bdesh is fourth biggest remittance destination for India.

Now take into account the medical tourism and shopping spending west bengal and India gets from bdesh.

This very lobsided.

Medical tourism only happens becoz India can provide great healthcare services at a very affordable price, we even have med tourists coming in from even US and China

I guess bindian are happy taking money from termites? 5th biggest economy that still begs for money for aid for its people.

Your position is logical although with a very positive spin.

An FTA is necessary but should only be signed if india truely reduces its tarrif and para tarrif barriers. And that is a big IF and we need to be careful and insist of formal and simple arbitration process to deal with any issues that may come up.

Given the relative size of the economies and the comparative advantages trade is never going to be equal between the countries but we can negotiate our way to less of an imbalance.

India has a history of aggresive protectionism, however we should negotiate in good faith and if it is reciprocated we should sign an FTA as it would be win win for both BD and india.
India should be able to increase its imports to 1% , if only BD would allow Indian manufacturers to setup shop in BD.
Cotton, vehicles, and mineral fuels are the three major exports from India constituting 1/3 of export basket.

Bangladesh is seeking FDI and have only ever encouraged it. Indians are free to come and set up shop.

You reciprocate the impediments. Stop India's export to BD instead of whining. Trade if its not a win win for both parties should be stopped.
What a stupid way of talking ina discussion forum!! Not bad for an Indian.

BD has almost no industrial base except that low-value garments. BD certainly cannot establish other industries soon.

However, when China encourages more than 8000 industrial items for exports from BD, I guess China wants its technology companies to build shops/ factories in BD, produce all those goods, and export them to China.

My assumption is based on the Chinese knowledge of what products BD is producing already. Very few out of those 8000 products are being produced in BD.
why would china want to set up factories in BD
and import finished goods into china
and pay a premium to BD while incurring losses (compared to having those factories in china itself and employing its own citizenry)?

It is not necessarily true that all goods made in Bangladesh will go to China mainland. China has a huge market in the Arab world and Africa. Many of the goods produced in BD cheaper will certainly find an export market in those countries.

Read the map. BD has closer proximity to the Chinese export markets in the Arab and African countries.

The length of a sea voyage from Ctg. to the Arab world is less than half compared to the length of the voyage from Shanghai. And, the distance from Chittagong to African countries is just half the distance from Shanghai.

This is why Chinese companies would invest in BD and Indian companies may not. Indian companies have little incentive to invest in BD.

No one expects China to outsource to Bangladeshi without any economic benefits to themselves.
China is gradually outsourcing lower end, labour intensive manufacturing to other countries due to rising Chinese wages.
Bangladesh needs to cash in on this.

Unfortunately some here see India as the bid bad boogeyman.

Facts are that BD exports to India are more than twice that to China and growing at many 10s of per cent a year. In fact some experts are already predicting a 50% hike in exports this year from 2 billion US dollars to 3 billion US dollars a year.

BD needs both India and China for it's economic growth and cutting one out would have the effect of making BD growth slow down and making its position via the other weaker.

Every country has its interests and BD's is to have good relations with both China and India. That is why BD is strictly neutral in any disputes between the two countries.

You are banging your head against idiots!!

They would rather pay another country more for things like cotton and mechanical goods than import from India.

This is suicidal jihadi behaviour!!!

I think by 2025 India will be Bangladesh’s biggest export destination.

And Bangladesh will be India’s third largest export destination.

I want China to join the game.

Whilst China is great at building infrastructure our trade with them is mainly military hardware.

Calcutta market people lost their appetite for food due to the absence of shopping tourists from BD during the early Covid time.

We import $16 billion worth of goods from India and about 17 Lakh BD people go for medical treatment and visit places like Ajmer Sharif.

The GoB must record how much money these visitors spend in India and compile data.

These guys are nice enough but unable to see the big picture as they are too India-phobic.

Exports to China will start to grow massively from the latter part of this decade as China starts becoming uncompetitive in garments and BD is in a great position here to supply the Chinese market worth hundreds of billions a year.

I can see 10 billion US dollar each of exports to both India and China by 2030.

Tbh , medical service is the brightest side of India! There is no reason to go bankrupt by taking mediocre medical services in top hospitals in Dhaka ( not to mention affordable hospitals ) , rather people ( specially middle class ) always willing to visit India for far superior medical services at very reasonable price!

Bangladeshi doctors are busy taking 30% ( some take more ) commission from diagnostic centers , instead of sharpening their knowledge on their own subjects. That's why can't provide services! Few can be exceptions though ( not on commission business , but providing services ) , but they are negligible!

Govt doesn't care about such things as politics is everywhere!
