TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta - Indonesia and Turkey was exploring joint manufacturing lightweight tanks (light tanks). The cooperation is still explored in the company or producer level (business to business), before rising on the cooperation of two governments (G to G). Light tanks that would be produced together has a weight of about 13-14 tons and will be completed 90-105 millimeter caliber cannon. This cooperation is a follow-up cooperation agreement the GoI and Turkey during the visit of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the country, in June last year. The agreement is more matured again when Turkish President Abdullah Gul make a reciprocal visit to Jakarta last April 2011. "The cooperation with the Turkish defense industry is now increasingly pursed," said Susilo.

Manufacturers from Turkey, FNSS, even light tanks were sent a prototype to the Army and tested by PT Pindad. "But the tank will be made later specifications will be submitted by the Army," he said. "They (Pindad and FNSS) has signed an MoU (cooperation agreement)," he said.

Defense industrial cooperation with Turkey is done because the country can understand the interests of Indonesia. As is known, the current government is promoting the development of the domestic defense industry. Therefore, cooperation with overseas defense industries are prioritized in the countries that can provide technology transfer and cooperation are willing to do the production (joint production).

"If the transfer of technology and they want to joint production, this is our priority," said Susilo. "So, we get a lot of benefits (profits), not just buying."

i must say that i couldnt approve this point of view of these indonesian fellows, to build up a fighter jet, a warship, an attack helicopter is much more expensive than buying it, but to have defensive independence is strategical important, thats what we are trying to do and i strongly suggest them to do the same way. btw im glad to cooperate with other nations like indonesia, may Allah help us on it

No, in this context, you're deling with an armored gun system (for support, not head on assault, due to limited armor protection), in this case an APC with a gunturret mounted on it

Well, I suppose in the geography, terrain and infrastructure found in Indonesia, light tanks / armored gun systems may be very usefull, esp. is amphibious capability is retained.
- archipelagic island country
- sawa's, rice paddies
- rain forest (dense vegetation)
- volcanic activity (steep mountains, rocky terrain, ash fields)
- poor infratructure (roads, rail connections, bridges)
These are features that work against MBTs.

Indonesia has a good number of AMX-13 light tanks (275), Alvis Scorpion (60), maybe some modernized PT-76 and otherwise only wheeled gun systems (e.g. Saladin). Likewise for Malaysia, which has only very few MBTs (50x PT91M, a T72 based mbt from Poland, 6 Alvis Scorpion from UK)

In Indonesia, almost all of tracked vehicle will be called Tank
only few who have some Military knowledge called it APC/IFV

Not Realy, there is some debate in Indonesian Military Forum about this
But MBT have Tracked and the Ground Preasure will not make it sunk in the Indonesian Terrain
and now Indonesia are planing to have some Leopard 2A6

Not exactly, Nurol is able to make these products because of years of researching and co-operating with Romanian companies. Although having BAE as a share partner has its benefit, Nurol was one of the first decent company in Turkey that actually made product themself insted of license foreign APC and giving it a Turkish name *Cough* Otokar Yavuz *Cough*.

You're talking about RN-94... but doesn't really matter now, since neither of them got produced. Now mounting an infantry support gun on a 14 ton-APC doesn't seem very logical to me, higher firepower means they'll become high priority targets. Should have active protection & slat armor if they want to produce this "tank"
