What's your thought on the role and size of the JGSDF? I'll be very blunt with my opinion of them... I think they should be downsized, with equipment sold off to other nations, and funding for the JMSDF and Japan's electronic warfare capabilities increased. Japan is an island nation, the JGSDF has a role, but sea and air defense are Japan's main goals. I just don't see too much of a need for much of the JGSDF's equipment. Certain equipment such as anti-tank and anti-ship missiles I can tolerate, as this is what Japan should focus on in my opinion, but as much as I like Japan's tanks and artillery guns, these are not defensive systems, they are offensive and their role in island defense is limited. Also, does Japan have a smart artillery shell? If so this would increase my support of artillery guns as they could more easily and accurately target enemy ships.

The current active strength of the JGSDF is 170,000, divided into 5 Armies:

1) Northern Army

2) Northeastern Army

3) Eastern Army

4) Central Army

5) Western Army

There are calls in the Ministry of Defense to Increase the size of the JGSDF to around active force of 500,000. Most likely this will be implemented as per the new Defense Guidelines that have require Japan to take up a more pro-active role in peace keeping missions abroad.

The size of the JSDF , as a whole, will be increased and the defense budget will realize this. You probably already read that this year we passed a legislative bill allowing defense procurement $241 Billion strong for 2014-2015. As the JMSDF increases in size, the Light Carriers, which can function as troop carriers for overseas, will be used in coordination with the JGSDF. With JASDF giving air support if and when needed.

Anyways, here's a map of the area of control of the JGSDF's 5 Armies:
