Ex-leader's brother 'led death squad' in Sri Lanka
Court hears police report implicating Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in operating a secret unit involved in silencing critics.

  "Testimony from the former army commander [Sarath Fonseka] shows that there was a special secret unit outside his authority and controlled by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa through the then-chief of national intelligence Kapila Hendawitharana," said the CID report, which was read out in court.
  
  "This unit was operated outside the army command structure and was used to target journalists and other dissidents."
  
  Fonseka - who led Sri Lanka's successful military campaign against Tamil rebels in 2009 - fell out of grace after he unsuccessfully challenged Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2010 elections.
  
  Wickrematunge's killing, which sparked an international outcry, drew attention to violence against Sri Lanka's media during Rajapaksa's tenure that ended in 2015 when he lost elections to an opposition alliance.
  
  In a written report to the court, CID said a new autopsy revealed that Wickrematunge had been stabbed to death and not shot as previously recorded in the original death certificate.
  
  Wickrematunge's body was exhumed in September for a new forensic test after allegations that the original autopsy report had been falsified to deliberately mislead investigators.

  The Mount Lavinia Court ordered police to carry out further investigations and arrest any suspects involved.
  
  Speaking to AFP news agency after Monday's court hearing, a senior police officer said authorities were close to making more arrests over Wickrematunge's murder, after five military intelligence officers were detained last month.
  
  "Now that the cause of death has been firmly established, we can proceed with making further arrests," the officer said on condition of anonymity.
  
  Rajapaksa family
  Wickrematunge had accused Gotabhaya of taking kickbacks in arms purchases, including a deal to buy used MiG jet fighters, and was set to testify against him in court when he was killed.
  
  Rajapaksa and several members of his family are under investigation for large-scale fraud and murder during his 10 years as president, in which 17 journalists and media workers were killed.
  
  All deny any wrongdoing and, in turn, accuse the new government of a political vendetta.
  
  A retired army intelligence officer was found hanging at his home in October with a note claiming responsibility for Wickrematunge's death.
  
  But police have said they do not believe the claim and are treating the officer's death as a murder.

It's rather curious to think that "One man show" Ex-army commander didn't know anything about these death squads. The so called "War Hero" Fonseka rallied masses for the past few years claiming he led the the entire army to the war victory and the political authorities did nothing in that regard. If @Godman's claims are correct then Fonseka has being caught red handed for blatant lying.

This article is written with full biased towards portraying Ex-defence chief to be a sycophantic murderer just like in a previous occasion he was accused of having a sharks who fed on human flesh whcih in the end turned out to be a bloody hoax perpetuated by the UNP media network. This is also a lie of similar capacity to defame Gotabhaya and his elder brother Mahinda. This should not be taken as a isolated incident where LTTE sympathizers are waiting for an opportunity to call Gota and Mahinda war criminals. P.S - It is alleged that Fonseka ordered the hit on Lasantha when he was about to expose the ex-army commanders deals. Though Mahinda has never tried to expose Fonseka for the crime.

The police is interrorgating members of the Death squads and several members have been indentified by the victims in identification parades. The Rajapsaka loyalists are ready to even murder people to hide their crimes so things could hard.
Investigations into Thajudeen murder another murder that was carried by Rajapaksa's security because he had conflict with Rajapaksa's son has revealed that Thajudeen was tortured before death and Rajapaksa regime called it a vehicle accident although Thajudeen wasn't even in the drivers seat. Several of his body parts were also illegally stolen. Police officers have been called by Temple Trees(Presidents residence) during the murder and they are currently being investigated. Police officers that helped Rajapaksas destroy evidence have been arrested.
Timing of the murders also points towards the Rajapaksas for example Lasantha was murdered right before he was going to give evidence about Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's "MIG deal"

Udayanga Weerathunga(First cousin of Rajapaksa) was also part of the MIG deal and 16 of his Banks accounts has been frozen. He is currently hiding overseas. If he doesn't come the Government is planning to issue a Interpol Red Notice

Prageeth Eknaligoda's murder has been hard as they couldn't find much evidence other than he was carried to a Army base. What happened to him after that is unkown but he was obviously murdered probably after he was inhumanely tortured like Thajudeen

The assasination of Lasantha was carried out by a group of bikes that were ignored by Army ,Police as well as Navy and Airforce personnel that manned Checkpoints. The person that ordered his death had the power to influence the Police investigations as well. Gota fails to give a proper explanation to anything when all evidence points towards him and his family

Gotabhaya responds to ‘death squads’ allegation

Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa denied Tuesday involvement in war-era death squads, blaming the then army chief for an alleged secretive campaign of extrajudicial murders.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been accused of giving orders to a shadowy military outfit allegedly involved in murdering journalists and political dissidents during Sri Lanka’s long-running civil war.

In testimony filed to court on Monday, former army chief Sarath Fonseka said this death squad was run by military intelligence but took orders from Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, brother of Sri Lanka’s former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said Fonseka -- who led Sri Lanka’s armed forces between December 2005 and July 2009 -- should answer for the excesses carried out by troops under his command.

“I deny any involvement with these killings,” Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told AFP. “If he (Fonseka) knew there was a secret hit squad, what action did he take as Army Commander?”

Just hours after submitting its report, police arrested a sixth military officer for alleged involvement in the abduction and assault of an editor in 2008. Five others were arrested last month over the same case.

Police also allege the death squad was behind the 2009 murder of prominent newspaper editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, whose death sparked an international outcry.Source: AF
