NEW DELHI: Despite repeated requests by Pakistan, India has failed to hand over the body of Pakistani national Muhammad Akram, who died in Amritsar Jail on April 26 under mysterious circumstances.
This is the second gory incident in two months, which reflects the plight of hundreds of Pakistani prisoners languishing in the Indian jails for minor offences. Earlier, Khalid Mehmood, a young man from Lahore, died in early February in Gurgaon Jail.
An official of the Pakistan High Commission while briefing newsmen here on Tuesday said the High Commission had immediately contacted the Indian Ministry of External Affairs through writing and on phone when it heard the news of the death of Muhammad Akram.
India did not inform the Pak High Commission about the death of the Pakistani national, he said. Though 10 days have passed, India has not responded positively and the body is still lying in Amritsar, the official said.
On the other side of the border, the anxiously waiting grief-stricken family members of Muhammad Akram contacted the Pakistan Foreign Office for receiving the body of their dear one who was 30 years old. They even visit the Wagah border almost daily whenever they hear the news of the arrival of his body.
The official said the name of Muhammad Akram was not included in the list of 147 prisoners provided by India to Pakistan while under the bilateral agreement, India was bound to inform Pakistan immediately about the Pakistani nationals who were taken into custody by the Indian authorities.
The official said though two and half months had passed, yet India had failed to provide the medical report of Pakistani national Khalid Mehmood. His name was also not included in the list of prisoners India officially handed over to Pakistan, he said.
Pakistan is trying to establish cordial relations with India by making humanitarian gestures such as the release of Kashmir Singh and the postponement of execution of convicted terrorist Sarabjit Singh. But the response from the Indian side on the same wavelength is missing, the sources said.
