MADRID: A Eurofighter jet crashed on Monday while landing at the Moron air base in southwestern Spain near Seville, a defence ministry spokeswoman said.

"A Eurofighter has crashed on landing on the runway of the Moron base," she said. She was not able to confirm media reports that the pilot had died in the crash.

The Moron air base is shared by Spain and the US Air Force, but only Spain operates the Eurofighter jet.

Defence group BAE builds the fighter jet with European aerospace group Airbus and Italian defence contractor Finmeccanica.

The Eurofighter consortium, Europe's largest defence programme, is in fierce competition with other fighter-jet makers such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Dassault Aviation.

Last month, the head of Airbus defence division, Bernhard Gerwert, said the consortium would stop making the Eurofighter jet in 2018 if it did not win new export contracts for the fighter jet.

Talks were underway to sell Eurofighter jets outside of Europe, to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Malaysia, he added.

These are complex machines. Something as small as a birdstrike/engine flameout can have big consequences.

of cource. But people take serious military tech into Jet Nationalism.
When Indian su30 crashed whole of Pakistan was Cheering "The next Generation of Flying coffins have arrived to india"
Same behavior by Indians when Pakistan JF17 crashed calling it a Blunder aircraft.
This was for the people who think not crashing is the only Merit certificate for a good Plane.

Schadenfruede is one of the few German words/concepts I understand, and it is applicable in situations that you mention.

Lolz have to consult Dictionary. Still cannot Speak out properly :)

Nothing funny about this. I feel sorry for his family and friends. Landing is always one of the more delicate situations for any airborne machines and as risky as take off. If something goes wrong you have not much place and time to react.

R.I.P. sadly even the most advanced planes are not safe from errors ...

RIP.Most advanced plane and second to the F-22 Raptor.Still prone for accidents.
