You need to consider the massive economic damage that Europe will have to bear to confront Russia. Unlike the citizens of Russia, in democratic Europe a lot of the citizens will start turning on their politicians if the economy stays in a slump for year after year. Russian EU trade is of great benefit to both EU and Russia.

Countries like Italy are literally dying a slow death with GDP down nearly 10 per cent from 2008. They need economic growth in order to pay for their growing older citizens. It is all very well asking Italians to show solidarity with Ukraine but if that means their elderly go without food and healthcare then I am not so sure they are willing to pay the price.
