EU’s Ashton proposes new nuclear talks with Iran

. . . . . .
^^ if the negotiations fail we will have to expect harsher sanctions or even low level armed clash in the persian gulf or at the eastern or western borders (if another nutjob comes into office)

I do not think there will be any armed conflict as it would mean the demise of the world's economy. So let's put that aside now. As for sanctions, no more sanctions remain to be put on Iran. I guess you do not know it but these were the last sanctions by the west as they sanctioned Iran as a whole and breaking all kind of financial transactions and air transport and shipping with Iran as well as forcing those countries that deal with west as well. No more sanctions remain. These are the toughest sanctions in modern history. Even Iraq under Saddam had not been sanctioned as heavily. The only next step is going to be a military cordon of Iran blocking physical access of Iran to all of its neighbors. And that is not possible as it only happens in war. And there will be no war. US is broke and its people are tired and Iran is too powerful for them to take on militarily. Trust me on this who knows abit about this subject, but from now on, it is only going to be bluff. Nothing more.

You are right but i am not sure if the sanctions on Iran today are as heavy as the sanctions in Iraq in the 90's. Iraq was even sanctioned to import medical equipments, Iran is not in that stage now, i think the US has much more sanction possibilities.. about naval and aerial blockade.. that is never going to happen. They just going to pressure other countries to halt their trade/activities with Iran

No. Saddam was never cut off from SWIFT. This was the last straw. About the medical equipment, if you search the internet you will see that even those are increasingly difficult to be ordered into Iran since atleast three years ago when news of it started coming out. And with SWIFT gone now, even the medical equipment are under sanctions. Now why you do not feel the pain as much as Iraqis did is due to these:

1- Iraq did not have the technological ability to repair or rebuilt the medical equipment it had. Iran is a different case. When sanctions hit Iraq, as medical equipment started to fail, there was no more foreign personnel that could repair it. Iran does it by itself.
2- Iraq did not manufacture medical equipment, drugs or vaccines. Iran does that. So in effect the sanctions are not having the same effect.

3- Iraq was allowed officially to barter its oil for medicine, food and essentials. Iran has not been given that option. Again Iran does not feel as much pain because Iraq was not even able to manufacture the first generation of anesthetic drugs for example Halothane. So patients used to be operated on without anesthesia in gruesome conditions when the drugs were short. Iran manufactures almost all of its medicines. The same is true for other industrial fields. Iraq could not manufacture cars so they suffered. If Iran also did not manufacture cars, you would have big problems now. Just like you have with passenger jets today which you do not manufacture.

Sanctions on Iran are worse than even Iraq's but the effect is not the same because of the relatively broad based Iranian industry.
