Etihad Airways had decided to suspend its flights from Abu Dhabi to Dhaka from October 1, but tied its link under a codeshare agreement with Indian Jet Airways to continue operations to Dhaka from Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata.

‘We can confirm that Etihad Airways will suspend flights from Abu Dhabi to Dhaka, effective on 1 October 2018. We will continue to serve Dhaka through its codeshare partnership with Jet Airways from Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata,’ the Abu Dhabi-based airlines told New Age on Saturday in a text.

Asked, Wing Commander Chowdhury M Ziaul Kabir, the director (flight Safety and regulations) of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, said ‘We are not communicated by Etihad Airways in this regard.’

The airlines did not elaborate the reason behind their suspension of their operations.

Kazi Wahidul Alam, an aviation analyst, said the suspension would drop out another competitor on the Dhaka to Middle East and its beyond especially to USA and Canada.

Etihad Airways launched scheduled flights between the capital cities of the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh on May 4, 2006 with four services a week.

Frequency rose to daily later.
In 10-years, more than 1.5 million guests have flown between the two cities and beyond since 2006.

Bangladesh passengers had chosen Etihad Airways to fly Middle East, Europe, and North America cities including New York, Toronto and Chicago.

Etihad Airways also operates three dedicated cargo flights every week and has carried over 136,000 tonnes of freight on the route since 2006. Freight includes garments, pharmaceuticals, fishery and other perishables. But, it was not sure whether they would suspend cargo flights.

Bilateral trade between the UAE and Bangladesh has topped $1 billion over between 2006 and 2016.

What is the reason? May be not enough passengers?

What is the reason?
No reason mentioned. But last month they cancelled Dallas/Forth Worth saying it is not financially sustainable after American Airlines cancelled code share agreement with Etihad.

On Turkish Airlines, almost 2lakhs for Dhaka 2 Dubai business class...

I am a poor guy, use economy class. Never had the opportunity to use business class. Only luxury I have during travel, I get priority pass from my bank for free due to having world elite MasterCard with that I can access lounges 4 times free in a year and beyond that with 27 dollar.

Makes sense. banglesdash is a very very small market for airlines. It’s not profitable to run flights to there.

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad to suspend New York service effective 1 October 2018

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways will cut one of its two daily Airbus A380 flights to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport from later this year.

The cutback will coincide with the carrier’s suspension of routes to the Scottish capital Edinburgh and Australia’s Perth on October 1, Etihad confirmed in a statement.

Nolok wali Sarka around 10 million passenger travel through Shahjalal International Airport annually. Tell me on which account this number is small for a destination?

Etihad has huge debts. It is phasing our older planes that it uses to serve SE Asia as these are too expensive fuel wise. It simply does not have enough capacity with its newer fleet as such the descision to suspend.

Rationalisation is due to capacity and as such descision to concentrate on its most profitable routes.

Middle eastern carriers are also under pressure in the US and soon will be targeted by EU. They grew too fast. Good news for Biman and other BD carriers, it was tough to compete with UAE who heavily subsidised their fleets in a bid to gain market share.

Because of government has set new rules in last month which will be effective soon. Under new rules foreign airlines must have local GSA (general sales agent) for conducting flight operations and a local individual will have the 100% ownership. It will carry passengers through code-share with Jet airways, though it has suspended operations.
