According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Erdogan "is sorry" and is willing to deal with the crisis in the relations between two countries.

Vladimir Putin has received a letter from his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressing readiness to resolve bilateral crisis caused by the downing of a Russian combat plane by the Turkish fighter jet last year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

"President Putin has received a letter from Turkish President Erdogan where the Turkish leader expresses interest in resolving the situation around the downing of a Russian bomber jet," Peskov said.

Erdogan said that Turkey "shares the pain of the downed Su-24 pilot's death with his family" and "sees it as Turkey's pain", according to Peskov.

Turkey is ready to take all steps required to "relieve the pain and severity of damage" to the deceased Su-24 pilot's family, Erdogan writes in his letter to the Russian President.

"In the letter, the Turkish President also says he has always seen Russia as a strategic partner and a friend", Peskov said.

"We never intended to shoot down the aircraft of the Russdian Federation," Erdogan emphasised.

On November 24, 2015, a Turkish F-16 fighter plane shot down a Russian Su-24M bomber jet operating as part of Russia's anti-terrorist mission in northern Syria near the Turkish border. Following the shootdown, Russian pilot Oleg Peshkov successfully ejected from his plane, but was shot and killed as his parachute descended to the ground by armed militia.

So, what is gonna happen now?

Russia will accept the apology and consider that all Russian demands are met?

If apology is accepted, will everything go back to normal, including Russian tourist flow to Turkey and sanctions on Turkey agri products?

Hi,

This is very interesting news----. Some---would not want Turkey to do that and keep the rift alive between Russia & Turkey.

If the apology is accepted---then russia & Turkey would go back to their previous relationship---maybe a little more considerate of the other this time.

So---overall a good change in the region---.

Putin know this is insincere. The apology should have happened the day of the incident. Erdogan is realizing Turkey is in a bad situation now. NATO have told him they will not engage in a war with Russia because of Turkey's aggression. Erdogan made too many enemies in such a short time.

Hi,

I can see the strategic shift in Turkey's stance. Post-Military Turkey is slowly rediscovering its roots and reprioritising its relations. Now they are not that not that enthusiastic for joing EU rather Erdogan has indicated to carry BREXIT style referendum since Turkish people have been humiliated over the issue by Europe for more than a decade. Now EU is a total mess and faces disintegration. Bosnia, Albania and Turkey have been kept outside the EU while countries with bad economies and worse human right records have been welcomed into its folds and I don't any reason but that the three countries are Muslim majority countries. Right now Turkey's economoy is growing and militarily it is becoming stronger so for all practical purposes it does not need Europe.

I think Turkey and Russia should come closer to each other since they do not have any border dispute or any such issue.
Its NATO-membership should not dictate Turkish foreign policy.

.
The reason is obvious, too much money involved in Gas deals with Russia and Israel, now that Iran is also opening up he wants all the gas to flow throught Turkey.
No principle is too holy when its about money.

Late apology is better than no apology. Both countries have too much to lose if hatre continue. Let's move on.

I think it definitely cause a warming of relations. In what form and how quickly - we will see.

Good move, hope relations are normalised and any issues down the line can be sorted out through dialogue and not confrontation.

Hi,

The insult and humiliation of rejection from european union was a much needed dose of reality for Turkey---.

It has made Turkey look deep inwards and towards those with whom it can have better relationship.

It will also help Turkey in finding its true self and the rightful position amongst the nations of the world that it deserves.

That can be one of the reasons but not the whole story.

The economic growth slowed down which was the biggest argument for AKP since they exist, if they loose this argument then it doesnt look good for them.
Believe me money/economy is a major reason if not the biggest.

.
Russia could say Apology not accepted and watch turkey squirm in its own predicament that they created for themselves

That's what I said, it can be one of the reasons or the major reason but not the only reason...Turkey getting a boot from EU seems also to have some weight in the decision. However a big unknown is how Putin responds. So let wait and see how things progress but I hope for the best for both the countries.
