Didn't say otherwise. However don't have any doubt in my mind India would have banned it even if the British hadn't, as India banned much less oppressive practices than sati like child marriage, dowry, polygamy etc. for Hindus.

As I have got older I have matured and reconsidered my thoughts. One of things I have really changed on is corporal punishment. I don't even think society has that right. The greatest expression of humanity is refraining from the animalistic impulses we have. I therefore now oppose death penalty. If you murdered me I would prefer they would not hang you. Give you a life term in prison is fine by me.

As regards men having right to hit women anywhere let alone in a marriage is utterly unacceptable and marker of primitivness in our world today. Which one of you would accept their daughters, sisters being hit by their husbands on any pretext? If a wife is bad walk away. That of course applies with equal weight the other way as well.

I'm against hitting kids or women, lightly or with any kind of force. It is not about animalistic tendencies but more about justice and fair play with me. Don't hit someone just because they are weaker than you and cannot inflict the same physical pain back that you can on them.

Regarding capital punishment I'm on the fence, as in a truly horrendous crime can merit it for two reasons. First to satisfy a sense of justice for the victim or the victim's family. And second to act as a deterrent against horrendous crimes. Kind of like acting for the greater good. Even tho the studies regarding a correlation between capital punishment and deterrence are fairly controversial at best, still it feels kinda logical.

The US spends 182 billion dollars on incarceration.

I don't think criminals should be awarded with food, shelter, free medical services, and all other perks, especially at the expense of the innocent who have to spend hundreds of dollars a year in taxes to fund these expenses. Please note, most of these criminals go back to crime shortly after they are released.
