ANKARA (TURKEY) (AFP) -

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said Ankara had pulled out 40 Turkish troops from a NATO exercise in Norway, in a new outburst of tensions with its Western allies.

Erdogan said in a televised speech to ruling party members he had ordered the troops to be removed from the exercise after an incident on Thursday deemed offensive to himself and the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Turkey, which became a member of NATO in 1952, is a key member of the alliance but tensions have grown in recent months over its crackdown after the failed coup and Ankara's increasingly close alliance with Russia.

Without going into detail over the incident, Erdogan said an image of Ataturk and his own name were used "and these were the targets".

He said Turkey's top general Hulusi Akar and EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik -- who were on their way to a NATO conference in Halifax, Canada -- had informed him of the incident.

"They said 'this has happened... and we are going to take out our 40 soldiers'. And I said 'absolutely, don't hesitate, take them out right now'" Erdogan said.

"It's not possible to have this kind of alliance," he added, speaking in front of giant pictures of himself and Ataturk, who founded modern Turkey out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire in 1923.

Turkish officials contacted by AFP said there were for now no further details on the incident. There was also no immediate comment from the Norwegian military.

Some Turkish media speculated that his comments indicated that images of Ataturk and Erdogan had been used for target practice in the exercise.

NATO's website lists two military exercises that are currently ongoing in Norway. It was not clear what drill Erdogan was referring to and there was no immediate comment from NATO.

While Turkey is still playing an active role in the alliance, its Western allies have been particularly troubled by a deal for Ankara to purchase an S-400 air defence system from Russia.

I like Erdogan for his foreign policy the man know how to slap Europe.
Not Europe, mainly US. BTW Europe is USA's lap dog

Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Algeria, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan, Oman, Libya and Bangladesh should form an Islamic army from their soldiers and military equipment and force Arab Sheiks around Persian gulf to join in.

That's the only way to unite Muslims, otherwise should wait for USA's meddling in our regional affairs and then more wars in the region.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has issued an apology over a table listing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish republic's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's name and pictures were used in a table listing "enemies" during a NATO drill exercise in Norway.

Stoltenberg said in the statement that the offense caused in a recently concluded exercise at NATO's Joint Warfare Center in Stavanger were "the results of an individual's actions and did not reflect the NATO's views."

The statement said the individual, a civilian contractor seconded by Norway, was removed immediately from the exercise and it was Norway's decision to apply any disciplinary action on the individual.

Earlier on Friday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that Turkey has withdrawn its 40 troops from a planned NATO drill after his name and the picture of Turkish Republic's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk were used in an "enemy chart" during the drill.

Following Erdoğan's remarks, NATO said that two separate incidents occurred with regard to Erdoğan and Atatürk.

Initially, a technician used a picture of Atatürk he found online to represent enemy ranks. After Turkish officers confirmed the incident, the technician was dismissed from duty.

Another incident involved a Norwegian officer of Turkish origin, who opened a fake Erdoğan account on NATO's internal social media network and posted anti-alliance comments in the name of the president. After confirming the incident with Turkish officers at naval forces command, the officer responsible for the incident was also dismissed.

Well I knew about Atta turk when i was 9 years old so this not a human error and regarding JF-17 image that done to shame HAL for their failure to provide India with a fighter jet. I mean what the hell why is every body in India rejecting Tejas. A jet that was destined to be glory of the nation has become a shame for HAL with every one rejecting it.

Can you list me one, only one google search term that one might use to look for "an enemy" that would result in both Ataturk's and Erdogan's photos?

That is like saying he was smashing the keyboard and accidentally wrote a book.

Turkey has been a NATO member since 1952 (it's been 65 years) and is the 2nd largest standing army in the "alliance". This is further proof that NATO is in a state of quiet disintegration. Western hypocrites who still believe that Turkey is a "colony" of theirs that they can order around as they please will pay for their delusions, greed and backstabbing. Attacks and insults like these will only make Turkey want to be more independent from the US/Europe and work closer with Russia, China, Pakistan, Iran, etc.

LOL NATO is joke more a force less. If Turkey pulls out NATO will be only a JOKE. Russia is knocking at the door and NATO needs Turkey rather than Turkey needs NATO.
