The FBI has told the BBC that levels of child trafficking for sex across America have reached almost "epidemic" proportions.

Last year, federal agents rescued more than 600 children from a life of exploitation, while it's estimated every night hundreds are sold for sex.

Law enforcement agencies in the US say the numbers of children exploited for sex have been rising steadily since the 1990s.

Ian Pannell's report from Baltimore contains some harrowing testimony.

The bureau rescued 600 children last year
according to an investigation by the BBC.

Despite rescuing 600 children last year, the FBI says child sex abuse is at epidemic levels where tens of thousands of children are believed to be sexually exploited in the country each year. “The level of paedophilia is unprecedented right now,” Joseph Campbell of the FBI told the BBC.

Campbell, who works in the Criminal Investigation Division, has seen individuals from all walks of life engaged in both child pornography and child exploitation, calling it a problem “almost at an epidemic level.”

Hundreds of American children are also being sold into sex, according to the BBC, where poverty and neglect are thought to be some of the main reasons why young kids are vulnerable to sex trafficking.

Jenny Gaines, who works at Breaking Free, a Minnesotan-based advocacy group that provides support for former sex workers, says many “manipulate and take advantage of underage girls.” Half the women who visit the support group were under the age if 18 when they were first sold for sex.

93,000 forcible rapes reported in (2004) only 33% of victims reported their assault to police.

• 84% of women did not report their rapes to police.From The National Women’s Study (Kilpatrick, Edmunds, and Seymour, 1992).
• According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, rapes reported to police increased 0.8 percent in 2004. Since 2000, FBI totals show rapes reported to police up nearly 5%.

• More than one half of the victims (55.6%) waited years before disclosing, with delays in reporting especially likely if the assault was perpetrated by a family member. (Monroe, 2005)

I don't know the exact year i.e in 1991/1992 CIA did a survey in U.S in which it claimed that every min 1 rape case gets registered..


• Sexual Assault injuries (nonfatal) in the US per 100,000 people totaled 73,834 for 2003. Of these 67,085 were women and 6,749 were men. 10,259 for every 100,000 women died as a result of violence in the US in 2002 while 39,418 males died as a result of general violence in 2002.

• in u.s they have a lot of places to go there and do the work and enjoy the $**..why they target innocent boys and girls ?? Banning po** websites is the solution ?? Or allowing the same marriage will solve the prob ?? the only punishment rapists should be served is death so others could learn the lesson !! But then again some European countries and obviously the amnesty international org will say that's very cruel & they don't desrve to be put to death !!
