PARIS — Airbus' A400M military transport plane will not make any flight demonstrations at the Paris International Air Show next week because of a problem with its engines, Airbus Military said Sunday.

The decision was taken "preventively and given the conditions in which you conduct flight demonstrations", an unnamed spokeswoman told AFP after what was described as a minor incident with the engines.

The long-delayed plane will nevertheless take to the skies at Le Bourget, with one arriving Sunday afternoon from Airbus headquarters in the southern French city of Toulouse that will do a fly-by during Monday's inauguration.

The plane will then remain on the ground for the rest of the biannual aerospace showcase.

Airbus Military said the problem would not affect flight tests with a view to a first delivery to France in early 2013.

The seven NATO partner nations backing the plane in April signed the final contract for financing the massively overrun project.

Parent company EADS had threatened to pull the plug on Europe's biggest defence project unless the partner nations stumped up more cash to cover cost overruns of about 5.2 billion euros ($7.0 billion).

Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Turkey agreed the project in 2003 and it was meant to showpiece Europe's independence from US defence suppliers.

Technical problems with the engines are in large part responsible for delays to the project, which is almost four years late.

wow, since 2003!

how does turkey participate in this program, and what will this be used for in the armed forces?

and when will we get the first delivery?

Transporting to a staging area they do use civilian carriers. While transporting to a battlefield, paradropping men and supplies, carrying vehicles will require something specialised.Hence the use of tactical and strategic airlifters. They require shorter runways and can be landed and taken off from unprepared airstrips as well, which civilian carriers can only dream of doing.

Also A380 isn't compatible with most of the world's runways.Full loaded while landing it exerts a lot of pressure on the runway which can damage it.

and beside it is a GIANT target in the air that screams "shoot me down"!

um.. I still like the hercules though, it's proven and is probably cheaper now that it's a bit "old". On the other hand, I don't think Turkey needs too many of this kind of aircraft, I can't imagine where Turkey would have to fly her troops.... we're living in the most troubled neighbourhood anyway :D

I think the same could be said about aircraft carriers, where would we sail... Cyprus ?

This is another program gone horribly wrong.... It is a failed project now with such huge cost over runs and other problems..

We will get first delivery on 2013 like France. First aircraft for France and second one for us.
