Deep respectful words....

But its also a big issue in lanka and not hidden.
yes. if they ban it, buddhists start thumping their chest about discriminating them, if you ban animal sacrifice, hindus and muslims start screaming. IMO any form of ritualistic murder and harm towards animals should be banned but it's the unpopular opinion and politicians won't take action out of fear of losing votes.

Vegans wont be able to survive a day in charge.

So think practical for once

The problem is elephants have a very complex social structure and culture too.

To successfully tame aka train the elephant you start early thus by separating it from the mother. An elephants biggest source of wisdom. Thats why its said no one can replace a mother.

Now these distressed animal lands itself with little knowledge nor means to know how to behave.

Basically its being naughty driven by hormones. Humans are fragile animals. Do the maths yourself
Great. Still I would trust people who are doing it for centuries than folks over people who are whinging about it just because someone is paying them.

I admit that there are miscreants who go extreme with their training of elephants.
But things are changing fast.

I'll be the happiest if elephants are free in the wild. But I don't trust humans to let them be alive if we keep them all wild and of no use other than its body parts.

That have been domesticated for thousands of years, hardly a comparison.

Well I know captive is a very subjective term and the Kerala folk do look after them, however what they do is not natural and that does effect the psychology of the animal.
well give it a few more thousands years for the elephant...just imaging if man stopped with the horse and dog because of adverse outcomes...

How many elephants are left? That's why they shouldn't be doing anything like this.

Population is not an issue right now for the elephants.

People eat them for meat in parts of the world.

The problem is the sheer normality abuse is towards animals and utterly inhuman human thirst to dominate nature.

Elephant numbers are plummeting.....

The worrying finding: Africa now has 352,271 savanna elephants left in 93 percent of the species’ range.

The aerial survey covered 18 African countries. In 15 of those, where information on previous populations existed, 144,000 elephants were lost to ivory poaching and habitat destruction in less than a decade.

The current yearly loss—overwhelmingly from poaching—is estimated at 8 percent. That’s about 27,000 elephants slaughtered year after year.
