NEW DELHI: UN atomic energy chief Mohammed ElBaradei began a three-day visit to India Tuesday as the country's ruling coalition appeared headed for a break-up over a civil nuclear energy pact with the United States.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head landed in the western commercial hub of Mumbai late Monday amid a spike in tensions between the ruling Congress party and its Communist allies.

The government says the deal with Washington, which would allow energy-hungry India to buy nuclear energy technology while possessing weapons despite not having signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, is vital for sustained economic growth.

But India's left-wing argues it will pull traditionally non-aligned India uncomfortably close to the US and compromise New Delhi's military programme, and have threatened to bring down the government if the pact is "operationalised."

ElBaradei's visited Indian nuclear facilities near Mumbai and held meeting with the Indian prominent scientists.

On Wednesday he will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, who appears to be steaming ahead with starting talks with the IAEA on a special pact that will allow the deal to be implemented.

Officials say New Delhi must clinch the IAEA pact in the coming weeks to meet a deadline to get final approval for the agreement from the US Congress.

A 15-member panel of Congress party and Communist lawmakers set up to iron out differences between the two sides is to meet in New Delhi later Tuesday in an attempt to bridge the differences.

Three previous meetings have failed to result in a compromise. The Communists have also called for a special internal meeting on October 18 to discuss the next course of action, fuelling speculation that early elections are imminent.

The current government has finally decided to move ahead with this 123 agreement. It is the right step taken.

India looks headed for elections to break up the communist opposition to the deal.

When exactly are the elections headed in india? And what affect will it have on the ruling congress party, as most of their right wing parties seem to be disapproved about this US india deal.

Elections can come as soon as January 2008, as per the latest reports congress looks set to better their standing and so be less dependant on left parties to go ahead with anything.

Bull this is the wrong which NDA committed last time, when it saw that the mood was good and went for elections.

In India, elections are won region by region, actually constituency by constituency.

Left will get its seats reduced, but they will go only to congress.
Analyse state by state and I somehow feel congress is going to lose this time.

If congress losses who will come BJP. Just because they are going for the nuclear deal and that too in the interest of india, if makes them loose the elections it is shameful since look at the economy india has now with what it was when BJP ruled. Congress is overall a better choice in my opinion atleast much better then the BJP. Anyways its you people who have to finally decide who's going to be your next ruler.
