For the city part... not really true... did you actually went to Turkey?

Turkey has improved A LOT (to put it mildly) under Erdogan's rule since 2003 (infrastructure wise - at last given the population size and potential, close economic ties to EU, Ataturks reforms 100 years ago) but in general GCC states have better overall infrastructure. For instance you won't find the poverty and neglect that you can find in some Anatolian cities and especially villages in KSA and the GCC. I suggest taking a look at the large majority-Kurdish inhabited areas of Turkey.

As for modern-day architecture (skyscrapers etc. - not a huge fan of them personally and luckily KSA has not many of them outside of the Financial District in Riyadh etc.) nobody in the region comes close to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait City etc. with the exception of Istanbul (partially).

One can easily compare HDI index and GDP per capita between Turkey and the GCC states. No comparison really. Those are official data btw.

As for the rest of the Arab world, it is another story, but IMO there are plenty of Arab countries that have preserved heritage (Yemen, Oman, Jordan, Morocco to mention a few etc.) that are second to none in the region. Here I am also talking about simple villages and towns.

He spoke about "Main cities" meaning Capitals or second ranked cities...
So if I have to choose btw Dubai or Istanbul... I will not even think about it... it's Istanbul.
Istanbul has a soul... an history beyond civilisations... and so on...
When you take Cities made less than 30-40 years... like Dubai...where you get only buildings with no ...souls... and all the same... it's IMHO..Ugly...
I can't understand why, with such heritage... they could make somthing of it... but they did the same buildings I can find in China or the US...

I really hope no such ugly things happen in Tunisia...

Stupid example. The oldest cities in the world are found in the Arab world (Arab Near East in particular). From Damascus to Sana'a. Why not make such comparison? Istanbul here is a "Dubai" in comparison.

BTW there are several ancient settlements and cities in UAE. Just not well-known and mostly archaeological sites or abandoned areas.

"Soul or lack of it" is a personal opinion BTW. The talk was about overall infrastructure. What you can find in large areas of Anatolia, in particular Southeastern Anatolia, you cannot find anywhere in the GCC. HDI and GDP per capita is also much higher. There is no comparison.

BTW, despite never having visited Istanbul yet (my father lived in Istanbul in the 1960's due to my grandfather's work in the diplomacy and business), I too most likely would prefer Istanbul over Dubai. Not most likely but for sure. However that does not mean that Dubai is a bad city. It is one of the most visited cities in the world for a reason.

I took "his" exemples... he put ahead Dubai and co... and compared it with Turkey main cities...

ofc if he had chosen other Arab cities...my choice could have been different...

Many people love NYC. I find it to be a slightly older version of Dubai in the grand scheme of things. One of the most visited cities in the world as well. Famous for its architecture and not much else (IMO).

Paris (90% of it) was built less than 160 years ago. Yet people love it. Capital of love and everything. Favorite destination for many married couples in the Arab world. I like it too. Lived in it and have relatives living there. Don't get me wrong. But it is interesting how much appearance can fool.

To me Rome is 2 times the city Paris is. That is a personal opinion though.

Sure, in such a case I agree.

BTW I agree with Istanbul having more "soul" than Dubai. That is self-explanatory but I did not like the example. However the "Dubai bashing", it seems not to have any ground reality given that Dubai is one of the most visited cities in the world. In fact the Dubai emirate and its rulers should be praised for what they did with 1 out of 1 million or so tiny sleeping villages in the Arab world. Respect for that.

If it was so easy, many resource-rich countries would do it but there is only one Dubai.

The good thing about Dubai is that it is in constant development. It's just the start and its been some kind of start. Can't "hate it" even though I am no fan of skyscrapers. At least they persevered parts of the old town. Unlike many areas in the smaller GCC states that were (unfortunately) torn down due to "modernization". It was a crime and there is talk of rebuilding those ancient architecture. Qatar for instance is doing it in Doha and other areas of Qatar.

And let's be honest. Dubai is a great "refugee" for many locals. One of the most cosmopolitan cities too. Tons of interesting people live there, international firms, major banking hub, trade hub etc. in the region. YES, UAE has some work to do as we all have, but they are on the right track. You can dislike their foreign policy, it has no relevance to what I am talking about.

I personally liked the recent move to allow a Hindu temple to be constructed.

Just like, although I am no fan of Erdogan, I do admit that AKP did a huge job in Turkey infrastructure wise.

I suggest taking a look how Istanbul looked like in the 1990's (wealthiest city in Turkey and the "true" capital city) before Erdogan became the mayor. So I have no problem with admitting this. Just like people should not have a problem admitting what I and @Arabi wrote.

This is Galata in 1990 (one of the most historic areas of Istanbul):

I know that not all areas of Istanbul looked like that (LOL) but they have come a long way under AKP (infrastructure wise) and I cannot deny that even though I am not a huge fan of Erdogan.

As I said, denying that the other way around is as foolish due to disagreeing with UAE foreign policies for instance or whatever you dislike personally.

It's as simple as this IMO. No need to start a huge discussion over it.

It's defiantly true, to illustrate, according to World Economic Forum UAE just ranked 5th worldwide in Infrastructure quality while Turkey is still behind and ranked 53 ...

are you blind or what ? and its 2018 , not 1990s .......
there are over 1000 new huge building projects ( multi billion dollars projects ) in Istanbul ......
in the next 10 years everybody will see ultra modern Istanbul

Turkish Economy is booming .. even Turkey has no oil and gas reserves
and 7 million new buildins will be built under the Urban Renewal Project expected to cost up to $400 billion ( 7 million buildings will be demolished and reconstructed due to being unable to withstand earthquakes )

I remind you Turkish Construction Industry is the 2nd in the World and Turkey rules by the great leader ERDOGAN

and what about Dubai 30 years later ? nothing

ISTANBUL needs more 10 years and in the next 10 years everybody will see ultra modern Istanbul

even currently only Istanbul has more population , buildings , luxury hospitals , luxury shopping malls etc than Dubai + Riyadh + Doha + Kuwait city combined

and İts not photoshoped buildings .....its real .. ACARKENT-ISTANBUL
