CAIRO: Egypt has blamed the United States for failing to reach a global document aims at ridding the world of nuclear weapons saying that “U.S. has officially blocked the final document making the Middle East region free of nuclear weapons.”

Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Hesham Badr, head of the Egyptian delegation to the 2015 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference held in New York City, denied the U.S. accusations saying that Egypt stands behind the collapse of the UN Nuclear conference, Youm7 reported.

Rose Eilene Gottemoeller, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security for the US State Department accused some countries including Egypt, of blocking the document due to conditions stirred Israel concerns, AP reported Friday.

The NTP Conference failed to get consensus on the conclusion document, hereby all attending countries, including Israel, should hold a conference on Middle East Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (MENWFZ) by March 2016, a non-deferrable deadline and under the brokerage of the United Nations.

Although Israel is one of four countries (India, Pakistan and South Sudan), that did not sign the 20-year-old NPT, the Hebrew state attended the conference as a monitoring state to “enhance dialogue with the Arab,” an anonymous Israeli official told Reuters on April 26.

Thus, putting such condition would impose Israel to attend the expected MENNWFZ; the United States, backed by Britain and Canada, vetoed the document, blaming Egypt for the collapse of the conference.

Washington’s veto came after sending a U.S. delegation to Israel to discuss the above mentioned conditions thaw was proposed by Russia.

At the opening session on the conference on April 27, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry renewed Egypt’s call for holding a conference for the MENWFZ which stymied since 2012 when Israel and U.S. officials announced that the timing to hold the conference is “inappropriate due to tensions in the region.”

It's a shame that Egypt chose this to use it as a platform to attack Israel diplomatically.

You would have thought they might take the opportunity to highlight the Iranian programme, but instead reverted to type and started windmilling against Israel.

Gas deal was agreed under Mubarak and was terminated after the revolution. Why it happened is still controversial as are the companies or people involved. Current state sanctioned trade with Israel is non-existant while private trade is negligible.


Whether the Rafah border is open or not isn't related to Israeli policy, Egypt has its own security issues to deal with and the current administration has a political stake in undermining Hamas. That's ignoring Hamas' actions that impede progress in this case specifically.

While I'm not someone who likes going on these we did you did arguments, the Syrian opposition has an awkward relationship with Israel doesn't it? Specifically, the exiled leadership of the FSA. Don't forget that the rebels' principal backers in the region have much deeper ties with Israel than Egypt, yet you would not refuse aid from Qatar or Turkey nor would you accuse them of worshipping the entity, nor would you turn down Israel's chief ally, the US. It would be interesting to ask the rebels saved by Israeli doctors what they think, would it not?

Bluntly, we have diplomatic ties with the Israelis, we have intelligence channels with the Israelis, and we have a peace treaty with the Israelis. That's about all there is, now you can think we worship them or you can open your bigoted eyes a little, either way it makes no difference.

Bringing Israel's arsenal under the microscope and exposing its allies commitment to nuclear non proliferation is resistant enough considering we worship them, serve their interests, and link their boots yada yada etc.

China bought classified technology from Israel in the 90s or 80s, forgot which.
France used to sell weapons to Israel, and currently they're not hostile.
It's clear and apparent - Egyptian government is allied with Israel, and acts against interests of Palestinians.

Never said Hamas attacked Egypt. Their obligations are related to the most recent ceasefire agreement which they have not fulfilled, but that's another story altogether.

The political leadership of the FSA certainly isn't in Syria nor do they represent the thousand plus groups fighting against the regime, groups that include neighbourhood defence lads and large organised militias alike. The Syrian opposition much like the regime is not a united front.

Qatar does fund Hamas but out of all the Arab nations it has the closest diplomatic and economic relations with the state. Even though it has not recognised Israel it has a number of trade agreements with the entity and has even invested in the country. Qatar also routinely plays host to the state's leadership. Qatar is a nation which has accepted US troops on its land and hosts the Taliban, their relationship with Israel shouldn't surprise anyone.

Joint Israeli Turk trade stands at several billion dollars per year. They still have deep military and intelligence ties yet that does not matter to you. They have ties that far surpass those of Egypt yet you would not call them allies nor would you claim they worship them.

Perhaps I didn't make my point about the medical care clear enough. It is true that every doctor has a duty of care, but if you asked those treated by them if they viewed Israel as an enemy would they say yes? I don't think so.

Egypt as a nation is not obligated to avoid relationships with countries that have ties with the Israelis, nor am I arguing that Egypt views Israel as an enemy, which it doesn't right now. I'm simply arguing that many nations in the region have much stronger ties with the state, yet you do not accuse them of worshipping Israel.

As for Egypt and Israel being allies, you're getting ahead of yourself. Moscow and DC share intelligence on areas of mutual interest, are they allies? No. Egypt and Israel maintain a cold peace, nothing more. As for the Palestinian cause Egypt continues its middleman role and was the largest donor of material aid to Gaza in its last war with over seventy percent of total global donations coming from Egypt. Not bad from a nation that actively works against them, when in reality Pal isn't its responsibility or obligation.

US bought F-16s and vessels are conducting a joint EX with the Russians in the Med a s I type this. Ha!

DC time and time again has failed to realise it can not use aid as leverage, it barely musters influence these days.
