The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet is likely to accord approval for the abolishment of the 10-paisa per unit Neelum-Jhelum surcharge from electricity bills.

In this regard, the ECC would meet under the chair of Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh on Friday to mull over an eight-point agenda.

According to local media reports, the surcharge was added in the electricity bills for the construction of the Neelum Jhelum Hydro Power Plant in 2008 and was being charged for over 2 years, even after the construction of the hydropower project in 2018.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Parliament’s sub-committee on energy have already recommended abolishing the surcharge.

Additionally, the meeting would also approve a supplementary grant for the Special Communications Organisation (SCO) on the recommendation of the Ministry for IT and Telecom whereas the issue of paying dues owed by Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) to a German company is likely to be solved with the payments likely to be approved.
Moreover, the ECC would also mull over approval of communication support for the Ehsaas Programme and the formation of a committee to solve matters relating to excessive taxation in the telecom sector.

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to provide relief to the masses, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has approved the revocation of Neelum Jhelum surcharge to the electricity consumers with immediate effect, ARY News reported.

According to the details, the approval was granted at the ECC meeting, which held in Islamabad today with Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the chair.

The ECC also approved partial rationalization of subsidies on rates of wheat flour, sugar and ghee in view of continuous fluctuations in international commodity prices.
It directed to provide maximum relief to the consumers despite a significant price differential between subsidized prices offered by the Utility Stores Corporation and the prevailing prices in the domestic markets.
The ECC also granted approval to technical supplementary grants worth over 859 million rupees for various departments.

Earlier on January 28, the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet had approved the continuation of general subsidy on five essential items through Utility Stores Corporation till 30th of June.
The ECC, which met in Islamabad that day with Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the chair, had also approved re-allocation of over Rs2.3 billion for procurement and IT infrastructure for automation of stock management throughout the network of Utility Stores.

As far as electricity bills are concerned, this government and its agencies are a pathetic JOKE for the people. They way they charge poor people astronomical electricity prices is pathetic, and IK should be ashamed of himself for doing this to poor people.

This is useless when electric bill is almost double in last few years ...middle class is really struggling...

This was the middle class who voted in Zardari gang and house of Sharif's who signed the criminally expensive electricity generation projects. And then took foreign loans to keep prices of electricity down.

This is not a choice of present government, but rather this is a choice for any future government: Either keep high taxes / surcharges to avoid taking foreign loans or take foreign loans to keep mouth of 'middle class' shut.

But yeah this is responsibility of current government (whoever's govt it may be) to right every wrong that has been done in past 72 years. Where was this middle class when Zardari ganag and house of Sharif's were putting in nails in the coffin of middle class.
