MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday said he expects more help from China when he attends the "One Belt, One Road" (OBOR) summit next month.

Speaking at a press briefing after the 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, Duterte mentioned grants committed by China for at least two bridges in the Philippines.

“We’ve been promised about two or three bridges. That is before the coming One Belt, One Road conference. I expect that I can, not really get something out of it, but maybe more help to develop my country,” Duterte said.

Since assuming the presidency, Duterte has sought to thaw ties with China, which got frozen under the previous administration due to the South China Sea dispute.

In seeking improved economic ties, Duterte has chosen to downplay the dispute and has even called Manila’s arbitral victory against Beijing a “non-issue.”

Duterte paid a visit to China last October, bringing home $24 billion dollars in investment pledges.

In May, Duterte will again set foot in China to attend the summit on China’s “New Silk Road” plan.

China has poured billions of dollars for its “One Belt, One Road” infrastructure initiative which aims to improve links between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

This dude is a leech. China should not help anymore. Not sure why their ally US don't help them.
USA doesnt help him because he clearly threatened USA to remove their forces from Phillipines because they were doing as usual some illegal moves.

He's putting on an act playing China and pretending to threaten removal of base. Cpc falling for old tricks. This was the same scheme used by Vietnam in the 50s when they need Chinese help with the universal communist theme instead of my grandfather is "Chinese" scheme. To think that nobody in CPC realize this is the funniest part

Well if i consider your statement as true, still its a good move. At least they are not becoming the tout of US and finding alternates for power balance. China is their neighbour so having a good relation with China can give them much more benefits as compared to USA.

I dunno what China get out of it. Its more like extortion not roi.

Its money well spend as it serves as a fine example of how cooperation instead confrontation with China is the way to go for countries around the world. Especially when Philippine holds the presidency in ASEAN, China will be giving as much if not more to Cambodia and Burma if Philippine choose to be confrontational. I'll say Duterte couldn't come at a better time for China as it saves a lot of headache and diplomatic cost for Beijing that it can now be put to better use. Without the Philippines, Japan and the US are without the fulcrum in their leverage in the SCS, and that you can't even buy with money.

it is not help. it is business. Chinese are highly business oriented. Pinoys are much less nationalism than Viets, they are more like Latin people, and much easier to do business with. Even with the territorial disputes on the sea, I don't see any serious obstacle for these two countries to do business.
