Drunk Russian diplomat rams into biker, punches Delhi traffic cop

New Delhi: In yet another case of road rage, a diplomat from the Russian embassy, who was severely intoxicated, rammed into a police barricade in Moti Bagh here and also rear-ended a motorbike, injuring two people.




The incident happened late last night around 1:30 am where the diplomat after hitting the bike was asked to stop by the police. However, instead of stopping, he slammed his car into the barricade.

The diplomat refused to come out of the car and allegedly punched and abused a constable on duty.

"He was so intoxicated that he could not control the car and he was practically unconscious. He was driving really fast and was unable to stop. His car is so badly damaged and this is proof of how hard he rammed into the police barricade. When the police tried to get him out of the car, he refused to do so," one of the bikers who sustained minor injuries told ANI.

Besides the other biker who has been admitted in AIIMS, the Russian official also sustained injuries and was seen with a heavily bleeding nose.

The diplomat was later taken away by his friend, who had a lengthy discussion with the police.

The police have established contact with the Russian Embassy and are contemplating legal action.

Well no legal process or punishment was initiated against the Saudi rapist diplomat AFAIK.

This is much less serious of an infraction. He will probably not even be asked to leave the country...though I will be happy to be proven wrong.

Russia at least will prosecute and sentence their diplomats for serious crimes unlike KSA:

I have no idea about whats going on behind the scenes and how much India will risk pushing the issue judging the "renaissance" of relations that is starting to sputter between the two sides.

It is a disgusting travesty of justice for sure. The justice will come sooner or later to that guy, the others involved and those that have acted to shield him/them. That is all I can have faith for.

I hope one day the world can agree to reform the diplomat legal immunity system for at least the most heinous of crimes.

It is not going to happen. Unless SA waives his immunity, which we all know will never happen, there can be no legal action taken against a recognised diplomat.

Same will be the case with the Russian diplomat.

Yes. But, I do not think it will happen. If governments started pursuing traffic violation cases, that is all they will be doing. There may be a remark made against him in his career file. Beyond that, I think, nothing much is going to come out of this.

Agree. But the offense would also be drunk driving. I am wondering if the Indian police took his breath alcohol level. That can be admissible in a Russian court as evidence. They used to have a strict 0% alcohol blood limit till 2010 if I am not mistaken.

Also he did cause grievous bodily harm to the biker.....that is grounds for the biker to sue him for damages back in Russia.

You get no diplomatic immunity if you have committed felony act in the U.S. It is a certain level of felony. Class A is usually reserved for the most serious types of felonies such as first degree murder, rape, or other crimes that are considered to be heinous.

Nothing much will happen traffic incidents are not considered serious offence in developing countries. Russia being an indian ally , he will simply walkaway. Suppose if he was an indian citizen then court case would take a decade and by that time he would have committed some other serious offense.

This is nothing compared to bhopal gas disaster when india let the mass murderer just walk away.
