Petrobangla, the state owned oil and gas corporation has started the drilling of well-7 of Kailashtila Gas Field on Friday aiming to produce 500 barrels of oil from here.
BAPEX, will carry out the TK 220 crore drilling job which is expected to be complete within next three months. Petrobangla claimed about 500 barrels of oil are expected to be extracted from the well every day.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the drilling of well-7 of Kailashtila Gas Field in September last year. But the authorities could not start the main drilling work due to the shortage of rigs.
“The field has a reserve of 44 million barrels of oil and 658 billion cubic feet of gas. “If extraction of oil is not found profitable for any reason, the well will be used for the extraction of gas,” Petrobangla Chairman Dr. Hossain Monsur said.
Kailashtila under Golapganj Upazilla in Sylhet is known as the basin of gas. Bapex in 2011-12 carried out 3D surveys in Kailashtila, Rashidpur and Haripur. It found oil and gas reserves in several zones below the gas structures in Kailashtila and Haripur.
If everything goes accordingly, about 500 barrels oil extraction will be possible per day from the well and if the oil extraction would not be profitable, the drilled well can be use for extraction of gas and about 25 cubic feet gas can be extract per day through this well, Petrobangla Chairman said.
Although the drilling was scheduled to start in December last, it would not be possible due to rig crisis of BAPEX. The rig is now busy to drill another well at Fenchuganj in Sylhet, said Tofajjal Hussain, Managing Director of SGFL adding the drilling of the well-7 would be start in May and the extraction of oil would be possible in 4 months of drilling.
According to sources, if oil is found it would be the country’s lone oil reserve.
Earlier in 1986, oil was first extracted from the Sylhet-7 Well at Haripur in Sylhet. After the extraction of 5.61 lakh barrels of oil, the reserve was exhausted. Later in 1993, the well was abandoned.
A 3D survey of Bapex has confirmed that there is a reserve of 109 million barrels of oil in the Well No. 7 of Kailashtila Gasfield. Of the reserve, 44 million barrels of oil is recoverable. If the oil is found according to the survey, it will be possible to extract 500 barrels of oil from the well daily. – Staff Reporter
