DRDO UAV Projects

@Indischer @Water Car Engineer @proud_indian

This Rustam-II prototype isn't the final design.see,This prototype is overweight by 400 Kg as well as the two Rotex Engine isn't enough as specified. So,we can expect a lot of changes in the final product as well as new engines are coming.Lycoming Diesel Engine of 200 HP Class is selected.probably some new version.

plus,Rustom-II will be armed, but not right now.it'll take significant amount of time before they'll launch any Helina or (if integrated) Hellfire.

plus @Indischer

I never said that bro,but Cool username, after Azad Hind's German Division Indische Legion(I guess).whats the meaning of this term???

@GR!FF!N Thanks mate. My username is the German word for Indian.

Regarding the change of engine, any sources mate? More powerful engines are needed no doubt, but they'll also increase fuel consumption, cutting down on range/endurance.

The two existing 125 HP Rotax 914 engines are slated to be replaced by new 200 HP class diesel engines supplied by Lycoming.

Forecast International: Industry News

As such the two existing 125 HP Rotax 914 engines (one on each wing) are slated to be replaced by new 200 HP class diesel engines supplied by Lycoming. Interestingly, the new engine configuration is slated to be indigenized with a domestically developed equivalent as a result of a collaborative effort between DRDO's Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) and Tech Mahindra. The Rustom-2's private sector footprint obviously extends into the MSME sector as well. For instance, Bangalore based FLOTECH Engineering & Trading services is supplying aircraft fuel rigs for the Rustom-2 while Nfotec Digital Engineering Pvt. Ltd from the same city is providing CAD design and CFD analysis support services to the program.

Can you explain how it is underpowered ??

Comparing the MTOW of Rustom2 to Predator and Heron , Rustom has a better thrust to weight ratio .

Also isn't the Rotax914 rated at 115HP . But the article in #33 mentions it at 125HP.

Don't Know Sir.but,Rustam-II will weigh around Predator or more than that, but will carry more weight and fly higher than Predator.until further details arrives,it'll not be clear.plus, what various news articles said that this is not final Design of Rustom-II,there'll be multiple changes.may be that'll lead to further increase in weight as well as payloads.

read this part.......

The programme is currently in iterative development mode with refinements in aerodynamic shaping underway and it is likely that a total of eight prototypes will be built with the last one serving as the base for production variants. While the target weight for the Rustom is roughly around 1800 kilograms (kgs), the current prototypes are about 400 kgs over that benchmark. Moreover it is unlikely that the final variant will be less than 2100 Kgs. With that figure in mind and typical margins for capability growth, DRDO has decided to fit the Rustom-2 with new diesel engines.

thats 3 times more weight than predator and around twice than Heron Drone.now, lets say, payload will be more than 500 Kg(may be more in UCAV version),while flight ceiling will be 32000 ft and endurance around 35 hours.thats some impressive specs.so,no wonder there is need of new engines.

but of course you can ask more knowledgeable members here...

Maybe for Rustom2 .

But the problem is power specified is low for R2 , also what confuses more is the mention of spark ignition .
