DRDO to convert Tipu’s rocket launching spot into a museum of rockets | idrw.org
Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) on Friday decided to establish Indias first archeological rocket museum at Tipus rocket court in Srirangapatna from where worlds first war rocket was fired during Anglo -Mysore war and exhibit the prototypes of missiles evolved by India .
Disclosing this to reporters here DRDO Chief Controller (R&D) Dr W Selvamurthy, who visited the dilapidated rocket court on Friday along with defense scientists expressed his dismay over how the worlds first rocket court is in shambles under pressure from encroachers and negligent attitude of the authorities .
I am shocked to see that monument is completely choked with encroachment of entry and exit pathways. A portion of the front wall also lies collapsed with illegal constructions raising their heads on all sides of the court walls he said adding that its really sad and appalling to see such a historic structure crumbling and vanishing from the scene.
Selvamurthy said as matter is of a great concern and place which gave birth and idea to the world on the basics of rocket technology should be protected.
I will immediately raise the issue at highest forum and write to Chief Secretary of Karnataka, Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and State Department of Archeology and Museums seeking steps to be taken to restore and convert the monument into archeological centre of great importance, Selvamurthy disclosed claiming to protect the monument at any cost without indulging in postmortem.
The distinguished defense scientist Selvamurthy said DRDO proposes to use the space to showcase Indias technological enhancements. Spot showed that way back in 16th century itself Indias core competence in rocket and missile technology was superior to rest of the world he said, describing defense skills and weaponery of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan formidable and ahead of times.
We can have a life-size prototype of BrahMos, Prithvi, Agni and all ballistic missiles, besides having an original piece of Tipus rocket at the proposed archeological rocket centre he said, adding that DRDO can showcase Indias technological advancements in Defense field , besides making it a tourism spot.
Ravindra Kumar, Additional Director, DRDO (Life Sciences) who accompanied Selvamurthy photographed the whole court and collected necessary information. Surprisingly both ASI and State Archeology Department officials continued to disown the monument. ASI representative Satish Kumar said monument belongs to State archeology Gopal, State archeology director maintained that monument should be restored by ASI quoting a report on it.
