The knowledge base available in various academic institutions and industrial sector could be used for polarising the defence research.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to establish its Research and Development centres in the universities and leading academic institutions located in different zones to create strong defence knowledge base.

Avinash Chander, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, told The Hindu that the DRDO was of the view that the defence research should not be confined in a few places in the country. There should be a wide network for designing, testing, and developing defence-related items.

The knowledge base available in various academic institutions and industrial sector could be used for polarising the defence research. Hence, it had been decided to set up R&D facilities in various universities to boost defence research.

Stating that the DRDO had established Research Innovation Centre at IIT Madras Tech Park, Mr. Chander said it had established R&D facilities in a few universities including on high energy materials at the University of Hyderabad and on “Life Sciences” in Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Eight more institutions had been identified for setting up of R&D facilities. The idea was to involve at least 10,000 M. Tech students and faculty members in defence research activities in their respective institutions.

The DRDO would define and formulate the research topics, action plan, aims, and goals of the R&D centres in universities. If needed, specific projects would be given funding. The devices and products designed by the researchers could test them at DRDO laboratories.

Not good enough. High end techs requites cutting edge instruments and skilled man power to work on it. In India, skilled manpower is easy but to maintain state of the art lab is not.

40 inch cable for 60GHz frequency band costs around £2000 in UK and other components such as mixers and high frequency amplifiers costs thousands of pounds. I doubt many universities will be able to do high end research as red tape and corruption is too high in Indian higher education.

.
Indian Universities are good in producing technicians not in producing technology like in UK,USA,Israel,China etc.
