DRDO might be tasked to co-develop active protection system for ordered Russian T-90MS tanks for the Indian Army. Published January 18, 2017 SOURCE:IDRW NEWS NETWORK Trophy active protection system India has rejected Russian offer of installing Arena active protection system (APS) developed at Russia’s Kolomna-based Engineering Design Bureau for the purpose of protecting its newly ordered Russian T-90MS tanks for the Indian Army. idrw.org has learned that APS offered by Russians failed in technical parameters and was earlier tested onboard existing fleet of T-90S MBT of Indian Army. The government of India was earlier offered Rafael developed ASPRO-A (Trophy) active protection system used on Isreali Merkava-4 MBT but offer was rejected since it could have lead to a single vendor situation DRDO’s Combat Vehicles R&D Establishment (CVRDE) could be tasked to co-develop active protection systems for armoured fighting vehicles developed and under development to provide the best possible protection to tanks and crew against a wide spectrum of threats including rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), anti-tank grenades, HEAT, HESH, CE, KE rounds and advanced ATGMs. Indian Army has been insisting that newly ordered 464 T-90MS tanks come with advanced protection systems so not to suffer same fate has the current fleet of T-90S which came without APS. DRDO co-developed APS with overseas equipment manufacturer will also be used on the Arjun tank series, T-90S and armoured personnel carriers under development. An active protection system is a system designed to prevent line-of-sight guided anti-tank missiles/projectiles from acquiring and/or destroying a target. The army issued a RFI for it's, "FRCV". Basically it wants a Armata type of tank.

DRDO have shown a design --

But this was before the FRCV RFI from the army. This isnt with the new RFI in mind. We'll have to see the new design.

If DRDO teams up industrialist, TATA, Bharat Forge, Mahindra, L&T, etc. should be interesting.

After we refused Russian's APS now they are working on Arena-M for T-90s & T-72s. So they will be back again in the game with Israel though it would be bad for their image if they lose again.
