Andhra Pradesh has suffered enough from terrorism and Naxalism, and now threats loom large over urban locations, reportedly leaving the hinterland and conventional boundaries or rules of warfare.

Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Missile Man and Padma Shri Avinash Chander, DRDO chief controller R&D (missiles and strategic systems), while speaking to this newspaper, revealed how the DRDO has a wide array of products or tailor-made technologies which can be of immense use to states and forces while handling such sub-conventional or asymmetric warfare and low intensity conflict operations.

Unfortunately, though some of these technologies have been eagerly bought by overseas firms, state governments are still shying away.

“Products being already used by armed forces have been identified for such conflicts and cover areas such as surveillance and reconnaissance, enhancing day and night vision capabilities, detection and identification of explosives and their neutralization, secure communication and jamming the adversary’s communication; protective gear and equipment for combat support,” said Mr Chander, adding that the DRDO is developing radar that can sense through foliage, detect objects buried below the ground surface, and get information behind walls.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) ‘Daksh’, is a battery operated remotely controlled robot that can be mounted both on wheels as well as in tracks. Its robotic arm fitted with an X-ray scanner can locate, pick and destroy dangerous stuff such as improvised explosive devices or bombs, and can scan vehicles for bombs.

“It can climb staircases and is efficient in climbing stairs, narrow passages and steep heights and has a range of half a kilometer in the line of vision,” said Avinash Chander, adding that with a payload lifting capability of up to 20 kgs, it can defuse a bomb with its water jet disrupter which can even tear off a plywood. “It can also be equipped with radiation measuring equipment, portable gas chromatograph and mine detector. It can block radio signals from triggering a bomb in case it zeroes on to one,” he said. Amongst other such gadgets is a hand-held thermal imager that provides high resolution vision in darkness up to more than a kilometer.
