DRDO develops corner-shot rifle for counter-insurgency

well its like you can change the mag & barrel and from 5.52 (NATO more accurecy but lesser stopping power and beter recoil)to 7.62( SOVIET more stopping power but more "kick/recoil") or 6.8(best of both worldsaccurecy of 5.52 and stopping power of 7.62)

its better to have a multi cal rifel than a standard one cause you can choose the best barerel & ammo as per your mission ... maybe

But that just messes with the logistics chain for the IA. They'll have to support 3 different types of ammo instead of one

The rifle looks good plus its multi caliber.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander told India Strategic defence magazine that the lightweight rifle is made of composite materials and is multi-calibre, capable of firing both 5.56 and 7.62 rounds. It is at present undergoing final tests at its small arms unit in Pune.

DRDO develops corner-shot rifle for counter-insurgency

February 7, 2014

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a corner-shot rifle for the special forces that provides greater safety during counter-insurgency operations as its user is not in the direct line of fire, a top official has said.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander told India Strategic defence magazine that the lightweight rifle is made of composite materials and is multi-calibre, capable of firing both 5.56 and 7.62 rounds. It is at present undergoing final tests at its small arms unit in Pune.

Once the evaluation trials are over, the rifle design would be offered to a public or private sector industry for manufacture as per the government's decision, and then made available to special forces like the National Security Guard (NSG), Indian Army and police units.

The corner shot rifle, which enables a soldier to fire at 90 degrees or at an angle from behind a wall without facing a terrorist or a target, was first developed in Israel. India is reported to have bought some rifles for anti-terror operations.

Chander said that the rifle is of simple design and would be easy to manufacture

well i dont realli get it corner shot is not a rifle but say more like an accesorry / foldable port handle as in israeli corner shot where they fit a micro uzi/M16/granade launcher or a M9/desert eagle before it according to mission requirement

a full leanth rifle will be too bulky in close quwater comat scenario

i think DRDO is just bluffing

The army as a whole needs different types of ammo anyway. 7.62mm for counter insurgency and anti terrorist ops, and 5.52 for conventional war at the front. It simplifies logistics to have one standard rifle for everybody, and carrying the ammo required for the mission. So the conventional units will only store and carry 5.56, and CI forces like RR and CT forces will carry 7.62 mm ammo. But they can both use the same rifle.

As of now, most units use INSAS, and some units use AK-47, with the attendant complications in logistics and training.
