DRDO builds propulsion system, may be fitted into Scorpene subs | Business Standard News

A DRDO-developed propulsion system, that enhances the underwater stay of conventional diesel- electric submarines, could be fitted in the last two Scorpene submarines India is building locally under transfer of technology from a French defence major.

The work on the Scorpene submarines is on at the Mazagaon Dock, Mumbai and the first of the six vessels is expected to enter service in late 2016.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) -developed air independent propulsion (AIP) system could be fitted in the last two submarines, but the plans could take some time to evolve into a final shape.

The original Scorpene maker, DCNS, says that it can put in place the indigenous system in the submarine.

The AIP enhances the underwater stay of conventional diesel-electric submarines. Normal diesel-electric submarines have to come up at periscope level every two days to recharge their batteries, making them easy prey of anti-submarine platforms on sea and in air.

Top DCNS officials told a group of visiting Indian journalists that the P75 (Scorpene) submarines are designed to be fitted, should this be required, with an AIP system.

In order to increase yet more the indigenous content of the P75 submarines, the company is working with DRDO to integrate the indigenous AIP solution in P75 submarines.

"Should the Indian Navy require such system, a fully indigenous AIP solution could be integrated on submarines 5 and 6 while respecting the existing timelines," said Bernard Buisson, MD,DCNS India.

Philippe Berger, submarines operational marketing manager of DCNS, said without AIP, Scorpenes can stay underwater for four days.

He said the DCNS' role is limited to integrating safely the DRDO-developed AIP to the submarine.

A generator set for the Scorpene under construction at Mazgaon dock is ready to be shipped by early next year. A clutch of heat transfer systems, which work as radiators, are also ready to be shipped to Mumbai in a few days in one of the company's facilities in Nantez.

The French ship building company is also working on its own AIP system, a second-generation hydrogen fuel cell.

It's good news . just afraid that DRDO won't add to delays in rolling out Scorpene submarines further.

News report is misleading. This "AIP" propulsion is not DRDO made. DRDO has no such R&D, funds and technology.

This DRDO-made "AIP" is actually based on ready-made parts(components) provided by French company. DRDO is "assembler", not "maker" of AIP.

Building such propulsion system(प्रज्वलन संयंत्र) requires heavy decades long research. DRDO never invested in this. If they had, this news would be in National breakthrough similar to ISRO's cryogenic engines. Also, if DRDO had such propulsion, they would rather test it in Indian submarine, not French-made submarine because no nation tests their latest R&D into a foreign system.

Also, i have serious doubts about nuclear tests of 1998. In my opinion, india doesn't have any nuclear bomb. They just imported few bombs from Russia and exploded in ground, to make world fool.

DRDO developing onboard equipment monitoring system for submarines - The Hindu

Our technology is proven on a land-based prototype. A submarine-based prototype plug weighing nearly 300 tonnes is now being worked on. The French MESMA AIP being offered for the Scorpenes is an old system with a steam turbine,” he said. The DRDO AIP can be reconfigured for the second line of future conventional submarines under P75 I as well, he added.

Wrong. DRDO was developing AIP and it was known for some time now.

On the air independent propulsion (AIP) system, which will considerably enhance the underwater endurance of conventional diesel-electric submarines, Mr. Rao said talks are under way with French firm DCNS to install the DRDO-developed AIP based on hydrogen fuel cell on the last Scorpene submarine built at Mazagaon Dock under the Navy’s Project 75.

If DRDO developes Kaveri engine for LCA, they won't go around the world saying - "We made Kaveri engine, but we don't know how to put it inside LCA's body. Please help us".

DRDO's AIP propulsion is not home-made. It is based on foreign design & help. Government is covering up DRDO's imported stuff by spreading "Lies". If AIP is home-made, why DRDO is not testing it on Indian submarine? What they fear? (Another reason is - A foreign design of AIP is not compatible with local submarines)

It shows they built it using foreign design, hence they need continuous foreign help to fit it in French submarine. DRDO is not sure how design of AIP works, because it might blow up. DRDO doesn't know "how to fit it inside submarine" because they didn't design it.

I never saw Boeing going around world saying - "Please help us fit engines inside aircrafts". DRDO has become a joke!

As long as these test can fear our enemy before doing any thing against us. :p:

DRDO should try some thing special for you cause they can fool entire world but not you... Why??

Why behaving like idiot?

Design and specifications of different vendor can not be identical.

That's because nobody in the world develops an engine, and then goes around world asking for help on "plz tell how do we fit this sh1t inside aircraft body". It is common sense.

DRDO's AIP is foreign consultant provided design made. They have no f*cken clue on how it works, how it is tobe fittin in the dumper of car. Go inside dockyard, u will see French seals on AIP casings. Opened brand new, after arrival.

You just admitted my point - DRDO's AIP is specifically made for French Submarine and its based on French design.

YuP. The scorpene were conceived as non AIP.... They offered us but we have made it and will fit it instead.

DRDO Developing Air Independent Propulsion for Indian Submarines

Defence Minister A K Antony told parliament in written reply to a question that Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO)'s Ambernath-based Naval Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) is working on a technology demonstration project for "Development of Land-based Prototype for AIP" for submarine propulsion.

With the AIP, the vulnerability of a submarine for detection by enemy warships can be reduced by increasing its underwater endurance in dived conditions.

Normally, diesel electric generators are used by conventional submarines to charge its batteries that provide propulsion power when the submarine is in dived conditions.

To run the generators, the submarine has to surface for taking in air and throwing out the exhaust. Using the AIP system, a submarine can charge batteries without surfacing.

The Scorpene submarines were conceived as non-AIP vessels, but French firm DCNS has offered to fit the last two submarines under the six-vessel project with AIP and the offer is still under the Indian Navy's consideration.

First,welcome in this forum.

Second, don't behave like an idiot.study the article provided..

DRDO Developing Air Independent Propulsion for Indian Submarines

Third..DRDO developed the AIP.French offered us MESMA.why the hell they're going to provide tech details of an AIP??thats suicide..

Fourth..There is no Indian Made Submarine, apart from Arihant.but thats a SSBN,it doesn't need an AIP.
