Leaders detained, Mirwaiz calls for strike tomorrow (report by Kashmir Media Service)
Srinagar, March 15 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities imposed curfew in Bandipora district and stringent restrictions in other parts of the territory, today, to prevent people from holding protests against the killing of a youth by Indian police.
The youth, Farhat Ahmad Dar, was killed when Indian police resorted to indiscriminate firing on peaceful protesters in Naidkhai area of Bandipora, yesterday. The protest was held after people had gathered for a meeting to pray for the early recovery of the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani.
Thousands of people defied curfew and participated in his funeral prayers, today. They chanted high-pitched anti-India and pro-liberation slogans. Complete shutdown was observed in most parts of the Kashmir Valley against the killing as thousands of Indian troops and police personnel were deployed across the territory to keep the situation under control.
The occupation authorities placed under house arrest the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and other Hurriyet leaders including Maulana Abbas Ansari, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Zafar Akbar Butt, Nayeem Ahmed Khan and Javed Ahmed Mir. The police arrested Hurriyet leaders, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Hilal Ahmed War, Firdous Ahmed Shah and Bashir Kashmiri, from their houses in Srinagar and lodged them in police stations. The actions were taken to stop the leaders from visiting Bandipora and expressing solidarity with the family of the martyred youth. The police also raided the residences of Hurriyet leaders, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Ayaz Akbar, Altaf Ahmed Shah and Raja Merajuddin, and harassed the inmates.
Meanwhile, the APHC Chairman in a statement strongly denouncing the murder of the youth termed it as the worst kind of Indian state terrorism. He also called for complete shutdown in the occupied territory tomorrow and appealed to the people to hold protests to draw world attention towards the Indian atrocities. Maulana Abbas Ansari, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Javed Ahmed Mir, Hilal Ahmed War, Yasmeen Raja, Muhammad Shafi Reshi, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo and the spokesmen of Jamaat-e-Islami of occupied Kashmir and Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement in their statements also condemned the killing of innocent youth.
In Geneva, a Kashmiri delegation comprising Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, Altaf Hussain Wani, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, Ishtiyaq Hameed and Ms Shamim Shawl met former French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, on the sidelines of the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council and apprised him about the present situation of occupied Kashmir. Ms Shamim Shawl addressing the session of the Council said that the Kashmiri children continued to be the victims of state violence in the occupied territory. Ishtiyaq Hameed in his address to the Council appealed to the world community to help the Kashmiris in achieving their inalienable right to self-determination.
