Dec 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena today said he would not allow those alleged offenders of corruption to flee the country, if he were elected to office in January.
"If we win the Presidential election in January, I will not allow anyone to flee the country if they were alleged to have been involved in corruption," he said at a meeting today.
Sirisena was speaking at a meeting held at the Solis Hotel in Pitakotte to launch a book, titled 'Doom- Boom Economy" (Alapalu Arthikaya),written by former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka today.
The Presidential candidate said that many who have committed serious frauds and embezzled billions through corrupt deals are waiting to escape from the country when the opposition wins the election.
Recalling how he was prevented from speaking against corruption when he was in the government, Sirisena said he will not allow any offenders to escape and actions will be taken against them according to the laws in the country.
Speaking of a rumor that he would close the airport if he wins the election, Sirisena said the government and the state media has deteriorated to the level to spread utterly false rumors about the opposition's campaign and distort the opposition statements in order to win the election. Speaking at a campaign rally held in Kurunegala on Saturday, the common opposition candidate said he will implement the current development programme in keeping with a higher standard
"We will not put a stop to any of the development projects that are underway. I must say to you that we will be more transparent, and work to a higher standard to accomplish three times the amount of work for the money that is being spent," he said.
Former minister Ranawaka at today's meeting said expenses for construction of several highways were exceedingly overestimated as much as over 2000 percent.
