‘Don’t sanction us’ Pakistani PM tells US: ‘We are in this together to fight terrorism’
PAKISTAN’S Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said it would be counter-productive for the United States to sanction Pakistani officials or further cut military assistance, warning it would hurt both countries' fight against militancy.

Donald Trump outlines new strategy for Afghanistan

US-Pakistan relations have frayed since President Donald Trump last month set out a new Afghanistan policy and lashed out at nuclear-armed Pakistan as a fickle ally that gives safe haven to “agents of chaos” by harbouring the Afghan Taliban and other militants.

The United States has already begun conditioning future aid to Pakistan on progress Islamabad makes in tackling the Haqqani network militants who it alleges are Pakistan-based and have helped the Taliban carry out deadly attacks inside Afghanistan.

Pakistan denies hosting militant sanctuaries, and Islamabad bristles at claims it has not done enough to tackle militancy, noting it has borne the brunt of violence in the so-called war on terror, suffering more than 60,000 casualties since 2001.

Former petroleum minister Abbasi, 58, who was installed as prime minister last month after the Supreme Court ousted veteran premier Nawaz Sharif over undeclared income, told Reuters that any targeted sanctions by Washington against Pakistani military and intelligence officials would not help US counter-terrorism efforts.

We are fighting the war against terror, anything that degrades our effort will only hurt the US effort

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

“We are fighting the war against terror, anything that degrades our effort will only hurt the US effort,” Abbasi said in an interview in Islamabad on Monday. “What does it achieve?”

US officials privately say the targeted sanctions would be aimed at Pakistani officials with ties to extremist groups and are part of an array of options being discussed to pressure Pakistan to change its behaviour, including further aid cuts.

Washington's civilian and military assistance to Pakistan was less than $1 billion in 2016, down from a recent peak of $3.5 billion in 2011, and Abbasi warned that Washington will not achieve its counter-terrorism aims by starving Pakistan of funds.

US-Pakistan relations have frayed since Trump last month set out a new Afghanistan policy
“If the military aid cuts degrade our effort to fight war on terror, who does it help?” he said. “Whatever needs to be done here, it needs to be a cooperative effort.”

Mr Abbasi said one practical side-effect of military aid cuts and U.S. Congress blocking the sale of subsidised F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan will be to force Islamabad to buy weapons from China and Russia.

“We've had to look at other options to maintain our national defensive forces,” he said.

The Trump administration's tougher stance is seen as pushing Islamabad closer to Beijing, which has pledged about $60 billion in roads, rail and power infrastructure in Pakistan as part of its ambitious Belt and Road initiative to build vast land and sea trade routes linking Asia with Europe and Africa.

“We have a major economic relationship with [China], we have a major military relationship since the 1960s, so that's definitely one of our options,” he said.

Mr Abbasi said it was 'unfair' to blame Pakistan for all the troubles in Afghanistan
Mr Abbasi said it was “unfair” to blame Pakistan for all the troubles in Afghanistan, saying Washington should show more appreciation for Pakistan's losses from militancy and its role in hosting 3.5 million Afghan refugees.

He added that Afghan-based militants have also launched cross-border attacks on civilians and military in Pakistan, prompting Pakistan to begin investing “several billion dollars” to fence the disputed and porous 1,500 mile) border.

“We intend to fence the whole border to control that situation,” Abbasi added.

As if Russia, Iran etc. are waiting for some statements!!!! Problem is the Pentagon boys are running out of ideas to counter OBOR - the success of which is very much the end of the US (read $) empire!!! Even allies like UK aren't that confident of the US capabilities anymore!!! They wanna see who gets the upper hand and play the cards accordingly!!!!

Reminds me of a Franco-German affair. During WW1 the French had the tanks but the Germans didn't. As a result they suffered heavily. However, the French found the tanks cumbersome and costly. So, they didn't invest much on tanks. On the other hand, the Germans understood the importance of tanks and invested heavily. The result is the Germams ran over France within a couple of weeks using tanks in WW2!!!!! The situation is smilar b/w the USA and China/Russia axis as far as Pak is concerned!!!!!

Sanctions will only make Pakistan stronger. We already experienced it how Pakistan managed to come out of it stronger after N test 18 years back.

Again it'd not 80's or 90's anymore , we have CPEC up and running and in few years with gwadar with its full potential will start bearing its fruits , USA and NATO will feel the heat In Afghanistan with supplies been cut off , good luck countering Isis and afghan Taliban ...

When will Pakistan start enjoying the fruits of CPEC? Not anytime soon. Otherwise, Pakistan would've kicked US out long ago. At least in the short-term, Pakistan will have to deal with US/NATO.

Our people suck in diplomacy. Can't believe we are from the same piece of land where Chanakya was born.
Why do we need to see things in black and white? What nobody ever surmised it to be shades of grey.
I am tired of seeing running from one camp to another, when will we learn then that we shouldn't abandon any country, there is no need to make enemies. Make friends, engage everyone, sit, talk and talk your way out of roadblocks. We are a country not some jealous girlfriend, we should act like a country.

in time .. and even after CPEC is all up even than there is no need for heavy confrontation between Pakistan and US/NATO .. if US sanction us, it wont change much now as it does before ..and Pakistan is dealing with US/NATO from last 16-18 years. Right now trump administration is trying to put their failures on Pakistan to bring India into the fold and as trump only means business he is just trying to milk India for investments .. nothing concrete will come out of this , Pakistan is building its Fighter jets , Tanks and Ships .. China is taking care of our Military needs and with Russia coming into Fold US has little leverage over Pakistan now ..
