SL is an Island, connecting with India will connect SL to rest of Asia. Trade becomes easier. It is a few who are unhappy with the link.

Talks on India-Sri Lanka bridge to commence in October

The Indian government will hold talks with Sri Lanka on the $5.19bn project to link the island’s North-East to neighbouring Tamil Nadu by the end of October.

According to PTI, official sources said secretary-level talks between the two countries have been decided by October to take forward the project, involving the construction of a sea bridge and an under-water tunnel linking 22 km stretch between Talaimannar and Dhanushkodi.

"The officer level meeting will include apprising Sri Lanka about the developments related to implementing BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement. The pact aims at facilitating cross border movement of all types of vehicles in the region. Since there is a provision of other countries in the region joining the pact, Sri Lanka may like to consider this for further improving connectivity between the region," an official said.

India wants Sri Lanka to join the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement, which is aimed at providing seamless flow of traffic between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last week, where they discussed the road link.

"Multi-lateral funding agency ADB, which has already agreed to finance infrastructure projects worth about USD 8 billion for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) region, has also shown keen interest in financing USD 5.19 billion India-Sri Lanka proposed project," a source told PTI last week.

Mr Gadkari had earlier said the Asian Development Bank is ready to finance the project "for providing connectivity to Sri Lanka".

He had said there was a missing link of about 22 km in connectivity to Sri Lanka.

"We are working on the project and as soon as it is completed, Trans Asia Road and transport network could be extended to Sri Lanka," Mr Gadkari had said.

Amongst opposition in the Sinhala south, the Sri Lankan government has kept relatively silent on the issue.

Ito has given you some details

And now Indo-Lankan trade is somewhere b/w 6-9 billions... now it might not be a great idea to invest on a 5.5 billion bridge connectivity not to mention the cost over runs... but it may be a good development once it's connected with BBIN.. but that's a long way ahead...

No move to build bridge with India, says Lanka
FRANCES BULATHSINGHALA — UPDATED

COLOMBO: Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday denied Indian reports on a move to construct a bridge between India and Sri Lanka.

Making a statement in parliament on Wednesday Wickremesinghe said he was surprised to read reports about a proposal to build a bridge connecting India with Sri Lanka.

Referring to the news reports that originated from India, Wickremesinghe said that the articles had been published without verifying facts and that it could be a breach of confidence of readers.

Meanwhile, Lankan Foreign Ministry officials confirm that neither the bridge, nor a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was discussed in Delhi.

However, the Indian Minister of Transport, Nitin Gadkari, had said that India is planning to build an India-Lanka bridge at a cost of $5 billion, with ADB assistance and that there will be high level India-Lanka meetings to discuss the project in October.

Wickremesinghe told parliament that several other Indo–Lankan projects were discussed with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other cabinet ministers and that an agreement on economic and technological coorperation is to be signed in Colombo in May or June 2016.

However India has made its point of view to SL government. It is up to SL to accept or not accept. If SL doesn't want to connect with Asia and remain isolated as an island, it is upto you guys.
