(From MY pakistani Friend)
I just want to clear up what I'm saying about Islam for second. I don't want Pakistan to become a South Asian variant of Albania. What I am calling for is the personalization of Islam. Only through personalization could the false cultural stigma's associated with Islam ever be repealed. The Pakistan of today is not the Pakistan of our Qaid-e-Azim. From 1947 to 1973 we did not enshrine any form of Sharia into our constitution. We have to examine the roots and motivations behind the Islamization of our society. Where did it start? Why? Who has benefited from it?
Islamization started as a means to reconcile our mantra of the homeland of Muslims after the secession of Bangladesh in 1971. Bhutto saw that a supranational identity was need, one which rose above Punjabi, Pushtoon, Balochi etc trivialities. Where else could he find this but in Islam? Our national identity was globalized. Our military became a military which was not for the security concerns of Pakistan within the context of our territorial boundaries, but rather of a larger "ummah" (which as we can see today does not exist). The situation was only further exacerbated with General Z. Haq look to legitimize his power. He overthrew a democratic party, and our main Islamic reformist/revivalist party was shunned because of their pro-democratic stance. Jamiat Ul Islami was favoured. Simply for political reason. Our society has done nothing but decay since then. Our military is the state. It has time and again subverted civil institutions for no reason but power grabbing.
All of these supposed "brother" countries like Iran, KSA, hell even Turkey and China are clamoring towards India for one reason and one reason alone, their markets and economic strength. No country find an advantage in Pakistan. Our economy is non-existent, our population can not move past our political and religious differences and act like beggars on the world stage. Pakistan has no prestige because of this. Think back to when it did, during the 50's and 60's. Why were government clamoring for our attention, and treating India like trash? It was because our economic trajectory was towards greatness. South Korea copied OUR 5 year plans, and their stock exchange in Seoul was copied from the KSE.
