A police spokesman on Friday said that five Pakistan special forces trained militants had been killed in the encounter so far.

The identities of the slain militants are being ascertained and the operation is still underway to see whether there were any more militants in the area, police said.

A top militant commander of Pakistani origin, who was responsible for gunning down Army Major Satish Dhayia, was among two militants killed in an encounter in the apple town of Sopore in North Kashmir early on Wednesday, police said.

With these deaths, the number of ultras killed in the past 12 days in Kashmir has gone up to 18, they said.

A top militant commander of Pakistani origin, who had been active since 2015 was killed, along with a resident of Bomai in Sopore, they said.

Giving details, the police said that during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, a joint search operation was launched with paramilitary forces and the army following a credible intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in Nowpora area of Tujjer in Sopore.

“During the searches, hiding terrorists fired on the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were eliminated,” a police spokesman said.

“On the basis of materials recovered, one of the slain terrorists has been identified as of Pakistani origin who had been operating as the top commander in north Kashmir,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said top militant commander of Pakistani origin was involved in a series of attacks on security forces and killings of civilians. He was active in North Kashmir, particulary Sopore and Handwara. Top militant commander of Pakistani origin had masterminded an attack on an Army convoy in Handwara in February last year, in which 31-year-old Major Satish Dhaiya was killed.

Three terrorists were killed in that encounter, but top militant commander of Pakistani origin had managed to escape after gunning down the Army Major. Since then, he was among the most wanted terrorists in North Kashmir.

With these two deaths, the number of militants killed in the past 12 days in Kashmir has gone up to 18. Five militants each were killed in Kulgam district of South Kashmir and Bandipore in North Kashmir during this period.

Another five terrorist were gunned down in Tangdhar of North Kashmir and one was killed at Tral in Awantipura of South Kashmir.

Major Satish Dhaiya had joined the army in 2008 and was commissioned into the Jat Regiment, Major Dahiya had joined the Army Supply Corps (ASC) in 2009. After serving with his regiment for a couple of years Maj Dahiya was deputed to 13 RR unit deployed in J & K area for counter insurgency operations. While serving with 13 Rashtriya Rifles unit, Maj Dahiya participated in many counter insurgency operations.Later, Maj Dahiya was attached to 30 Rashtriya Riffles operating in Kupwara area of J & K.

On 14 Feb 2017, information was received from the intelligence sources about the presence of militants in Handwara area of J & K. After analyzing the specific inputs it was decided by the security forces to launch a joint operation of J & K police and army’s 30 RR unit to nab the militants. The joint team swung into action and the operation started around 5 PM in evening of Feb 14, 2017. As per the intelligence inputs, the militants were holed up in a residential building and the joint team threw a cordon around the suspected area.

On being challenged by the troops , the terrorists opened fire at them from their hideout. A fierce gun battle followed lasting several hours. Major Satish Dahiya was leading the operation, tactically moving his troops to close all escape routes for the militants. The militants in sheer desperation resorted to indiscriminate and heavy firing against the troops. During the exchange of fire Major Dahiya and three soldiers sustained serious injuries. However Major Dahiya continued firing and ensured that all four terrorists were neutralized before he was evacuated to the hospital. Major Dahiya later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital and was martyred. The gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” winner, Major Dahiya was epitome of courage and fighting spirit who laid down his life in the service of the nation.

Ahmad Khan, Handwara sub-divisional police officer and Major Dahiya's friend, told The Telegraph today.

Khan, who was also part of the operation, said his friend led from the front and killed the Lashkar trio. "While he was changing magazines, he took bullets and died later. He was a very courageous officer," the police officer said.

Major Dahiya was among four soldiers killed in two separate encounters with militants yesterday. CRPF commandant Chetan Kumar Cheetah and Major B.S. Thapa were critically injured in the other operation in Bandipore.

The bodies of the fallen soldiers were airlifted to their home states today. Among the dead was gunner Astosh Kumar, an Uttar Pradesh native. Astosh's cousin Ashok Kumar Yadav said the 24-year-old was the only bread-earner in the family and is survived by his mother Sheila Devi and a brother who is physically challenged.

The two other slain soldiers were rifleman Ravi Kumar, from Jammu, and para-trooper Dharmendra Kumar from Uttarakhand. Ravi, who was 33, is survived by his wife and their three-year-old daughter. Dharmendra, 26, is survived by his parents.

Border Action Team’s signature seen in his mutilation

A day after a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed along the Jammu border after he and his team came under unprovoked firing from Pakistan, a photograph emerged suggesting his throat had been slit.

A senior official told The Hindu that they did not rule out the role of the Border Action Team (BAT) of the Pakistan Army that had in the past beheaded jawans along the Line of Control.

Head constable Narender Singh, part of the BSF team, had gone ahead along the International Border in the Ramgarh sector to clear the elephant grass that provides cover to infiltrators. Around 10.40 a.m. on Tuesday, the team came under fire, leading to his death. The body was located by his team through “traces of his blood.”

This is the first time such an incident has taken place along the border in Jammu. The BSF said in a statement the body had bullet injuries on “torso, including neck.”

“The patrol retaliated to the firing and tactically moved to its side of the fence. It found one of its members missing. With reinforcement from company headquarters, the complete area was sanitised first and then the search started for the missing jawan. The area between the fence and the IB is undulating, marshy and has thick sarkanda growth which made the search difficult. With much effort, the body of missing jawan HC Narender Singh was found with multiple bullet injuries on his torso including neck,” the statement said.

A strong protest has been lodged with the Pakistan Rangers over the unprovoked firing and the loss of a BSF trooper, it said.

“The office of the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) took up the matter with Pakistan DGMO yesterday [Tuesday]. They refused to admit that there had been any incident of unprovoked firing. We have also asked the Foreign Ministry to take up the issue with Pakistan,” the official said.

Sent for post-mortem
The 740 km LoC is under the operational control of the Army and the 192 km IB in Jammu is manned by the BSF. The jawan’s body has been sent for post-mortem.

“We don’t know how he was killed, it is a matter of investigation…he had at least three bullet wounds. We are investigating the circumstances….it was an unprovoked firing in the morning hours. The initial presumption was that he was injured and had not been able to come back. Only when the other members got back, they found he was not there,” the official said.

The BSF statement said such patrols are routinely sent to clear the wild vegetation for clearing the field of view along the IB. This area is also of vital importance as the Pakistan side has a protective bundh (bunker) closer to the IB.

Jawan’s death avenged: BSF chief

New Delhi, September 29, 2018 00:51 IST
Updated: September 29, 2018 00:53 IST

Border Security Force (BSF) chief K.K. Sharma said on Friday that sufficient action has been taken along the Line of Control (LoC) to “avenge” the death of the BSF soldier whose mutilated body was recovered from Pakistani territory across the Jammu border on September 18.

Mr. Sharma said ceasefire violations were the lowest in the past two years but there was “more aggression on the border” after Imran Khan was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

On September 18, head constable Narender Singh, who had gone ahead of the fence along the International Border (IB) in the Ramgarh sector in Jammu to clear elephant grass, went missing after his team came under heavy fire from Pakistan. His bullet-riddled body was found later.

The outgoing BSF chief said this was the first time that such an incident had been reported along the IB. “It was the work of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT), ” he said.

The Hindu reported on June 21 that BSF got Pakistan to conduct a joint search to locate Singh, whose mutilated body was found 30-40 metres inside Pakistani territory.

He said there were launch pads of militants, particularly along the LoC. “The camps are sometimes very close, some 5-7 km near the border. This year there has been no infiltration from the IB…we have taken sufficient action along the LoC to avenge the death of the soldier…after this no firing has taken place from across the border. We reserve our right to retaliate along the IB and it will be at a time and place of our choosing,” he said.

Mr. Sharma said the influx of Rohingya from the Bangladesh border had been contained but it will continue to be a challenge till there is a permanent solution to the issue.

He said his earlier statement that West Bengal was slightly friendly to the Rohingya as it had set up special camps for 70 Rohingya families who were already in India was a “statement of fact.”

Mr. Sharma defended attending an event organised by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated NGO earlier this year. “The event was organised by Seema Jagran Manch. It was not RSS. They are active in areas along the Bangladesh border. We are always there for any NGO that seeks our help as we have a lot of civic programmes. I briefed them openly and in uniform…in public view. Is there any ban on that?” he said.

The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal had objected to this and asked why a serving BSF DG attended an ‘RSS-backed NGO’s function in Kolkata in uniform.’

At a public meeting in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also said that “adequate action has been taken 2-3 days ago”.

Indian and Pakistani armies on Saturday traded heavy fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Defence sources said the Pakistani army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Karnah sector of Kupwara district.

“They are using small arms, automatics and mortars to target Indian positions in Sadhpora area of Karnah sector. Our troops are retaliating effectively and strongly. Till last reports came in, heavy firing exchanges were going on in the area,” a source said.

As per the agreement between India and Pakistan, helicopters are barred coming within 1 kilometre of the LoC on both the sides.

Indian Army on Sunday said Pakistani Army violated airspace along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Pir Panjal's Valley’s Poonch district.

A Jammu-based defence spokesman Lt. Col. Devendra Anand said the air violation was noted at 12:10 p.m. by a Pakistani helicopter in Poonch Sector. Preliminary reports suggest the Pakistani military helicopter flew for nearly five minutes within 250 meters of the LoC and flew over Gulpur Sector before returning back.

However, the Army did not divulge further details on how long and how deep did the helicopter managed to fly in the Indian airspace. As per the agreement between India and Pakistan, helicopters are barred coming within 1 kilometre of the LoC on both the sides.

This comes 12 hours after Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire alone the LoC in north Kashmir's Kupwara. The Army said it foiled "major" infiltration bids along LoC in Tanghdar Sector on Saturday evening. "Pakistani Army was providing cover fire to the infiltrators," said the Army.

498 incidents of cross-border firing have taken place in till Sept. 2018 along the International Border in Jammu

Incidents of unprovoked firing from the Pakistani side along the international border in Jammu have quadrupled this year as against 2017 and the figure was the highest in the past five years, according to official data.

The latest data accessed by PTI also shows that the Border Security Force (BSF) suffered the maximum casualties this year — 12 deaths and 40 injured.

The data shows that till September this year, a total of 498 incidents of cross-border firing have taken place along the international border in Jammu as compared to 111 last year.

The corresponding figures for the previous three years were 204 (in 2016), 350 (in 2015) and 127 (in 2014).

Twelve BSF personnel have been killed in these incidents this year, including the brutal killing of Head Constable Narender Singh last month. Singh was shot dead and his throat slit when his team went towards the fence to cut thick and long elephant grass near their border post in Ramgarh sector of Jammu.

A “record-high” number of 40 jawans have been injured in these incidents this year and these figures are the highest in the past five years, the data said.

A BSF jawan was also killed along the small portion of the Line of Control (LoC) that falls in Jammu this year, the data said. While the BSF is deployed under the operational command of the Army along the LoC, it secures the international border independently.

Last year, two personnel of the border guarding force were killed and seven injured due to sniping and mortar shelling incidents along the international border while three BSF personnel were killed and 10 injured in such incidents in 2016.

Similarly, a BSF jawan was killed and five were injured in 2015 while two men were killed and 14 were injured in 2014 at this frontier in Jammu and Kashmir.

A senior official of the force said in view of the recent killing of the BSF jawan along this frontier by Pakistani border action team (BAT), the force has asked the forward units along the international border to be on “extra alert and vigilant“.

“The relations between the two countries and their security forces are strained for quite sometime now. It is, therefore, expected that the hostilities may rise and audacious attacks can be launched by the other side. The forward units hence have been asked to be very very cautious,” the official, who did not wish to be identified, said.

Former BSF Director General K.K. Sharma, who retired last month, had told reporters during his last press conference in New Delhi on September 28 that they were witnessing a “more aggressive stance” of the opponent along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir after Imran Khan took over as Pakistan’s Prime Minister.
