Diffusing tensions with Pakistan: Top-level US officials to arrive in Islamabad tomorrow

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration has decided to ease tensions with Pakistan by sending two top-level American officials to Islamabad in the coming days to hold talks.

According to details, the Obama administration has decided to send a senior adviser to the US President and US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson to Pakistan.

Olson is due to arrive in Pakistan tomorrow, where he will hold talks with the civil and military leadership on a range of topics including Pak-USA relations and regional issues.

Sources disclosed that the Obama administration was concerned due to the recent downslide in relations between Pakistan and the United States. Top-level sources also disclosed that the American officials will hold a meeting tomorrow with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz and Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security, Nasir Khan Janjua.

Talks will most likely focus on how to take steps to ensure lasting stability in Afghanistan and to promote regional harmony.

Sources have also disclosed that a meeting between the American delegation and PM Nawaz's daughter Maryam Nawaz is also on the cards.

Relations between the United States and Pakistan took a turn for the worse after the May 21 American drone strike in which Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed. Pakistan termed the drone strike as an attack on its sovereignty and claimed that the Afghan reconciliation process had been negatively affected due to the attack.

Don't you think we have 2 super power friends now? China and Russia... Even USA is a friend it is our own mistake that we did not present our case properly.

There is also an other mistake when we tried to give our enemies one more chance to come clean which did not go well. They infect thought this to be our weakness.


Bases in India are not possible because that would increase the stake to a level where India would find herself in the corner. The Indians like to call shots but giving USA bases would indicate that India has surrendered this to USA.

The US needs to get out from Afghanistan. The way that it is most likely to use is through Pakistan hence the can not remain an enemy with Pakistan. They are going to give certain things and concessions and also try to find a way through the congress to approve all the issues with Pakistan because they do not want China to be siting in Pakistan and monitoring US movements.

A good analysis. It's a 2-way street. If few chatters, monitored in Langley, aren't figured out by analysts before the next briefing to the White House, they'll rush to Pak for clarifications. How Pak manages this delicate rope walk staged between Mount Everest and K2 is there to be seen...

Just curious as to what people would think if, say we allowed the US to station some naval ships in sindh for a long period of time, till we build up our own navy. Better than allowing them to build a massive base smack in the middle of our capital. Any thoughts?

Can't really argue with that but I have seen this nation becoming one. If you remember when Pakistan carried out nuclear tests and sanctions were put, NS than introduce Karz uttero mulk sawanro and this nation got one. I would like to disagree... If we had character we would not be running after one and other back biting and finding excuses for our own doings. Democracy has nothing to do because what we are seeing is sham democracy where every one is tying to act as a king.

Till we defend corruption and take our leaders as some sort of holy cow which are above accountability we can never really be one as a nation.

We have seen tough times and have survived for so long when others predicted that we wont be able to make it few years down the road. There was definitely something there. There is no denying that accountability starts from one self, but than there are others who neither want to look at themselves nor would allow anyone else to do so a case in point the attitude of the ruling elite after the Panama leaks. Instead of leading by an example, they stooped low on personal attacking anywhere who dared raise voice against the Baadshaat.
Anyway lets see how things turn out to be. Personally the picture i see is very bleak. With a PM on self imposed exile and not FM Pakistan seems directionless in the international arena which is a pitiful situation considering how our enemies are taking advantages of this situation.

I'm all for cutting Pakistan off. We've had nothing but double-cross and blackmail for all the money we've given you. If Pakistan hadn't practiced such duplicity we'd have wrapped up the Afghan engagement in 1 year or so, removed the juhadi nuts out and not have spent hundreds of billions and thousands of lives. The sheer audacity of providing refuge and shelter to the likes of osama bin laden while at the same time taking billions to pose like you are searching for him!
