Pakistan was heading towards victory in 1965 war. Just why did Russia intervene? Is it because it didn't want India to lose?

When someone here stated that it takes the nod of superpower to change borders, I was skeptical. Now I am having second thoughts.

Did Russia’s repeated active help to India like in 1965 and 1971 wars irk ISI? And was that the reason ISI decided to help USA defeat Soviet Union in Afghanistan?

Moreover just how a third world country like India been able to safeguard it’s borders from a bigger and formidable neighbor like China for so many decades? Has Russia been helping behind the scene all along? Like covertly needling China at Russia-China border so that the Chinese focus is diverted to that front.

These mysteries are driving people crazy. Someone should give answers.

it had already lost....USSR wanted to build its credibility with Pakistan specially after u2 accident same way has how Russia doing today with Astana and Sochi talks.....back in the day Tashkent was Astana/Sochi for them, and it was rewarded in late 60s in Ayub Khan's era when it build steel mills in karachi and trade was improved. Pakistan was building at 6% back then a growth rate we maintained till 80s. Only 4 stock exchanges used to be discussed back then and KSE 100 index of Karachi was the only one from Asia back then out of those 4. Pakistan was called an Asian tiger back then.

So thats why USSR did it instead of America and tried to project itself as an honest broker. And put itself in a better position politically in South Asia instead of America, something that Russia is still trying to do till today with rapprochement with Pakistan.

Pakistan's geographical reason is the key. It was still valid back then for russia and so is it today.

This has been discussed a million times, and no Pakistan was not on the verge of winning and nor was India. The war was a stalemate. Thread locked.
