India's Ulfa rebel leader: Son abducted in Bangladesh

By Subir Bhaumik

BBC News, Calcutta
Mr Barua has opposed talks with India The leader of an Indian separatist group has alleged that his son has been kidnapped in Bangladesh.

Paresh Barua, head of the military wing of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Ulfa), said his teenage son's kidnappers were "pressurising" him to negotiate with the Indian government.

Indian intelligence officials have dismissed Mr Barua's claim.

They say the Ulfa is divided on the question of whether to join the peace process with India or not.

Ulfa rebels have fought for a separate Assamese homeland since 1979.

In an emailed statement, Mr Barua said his son's kidnappers tactics "won't work".

"Thousands of young men and women have died fighting for Assam's independence and my son may join that long list of martyrs. If that happens, I will be prepared for it," he said.

Mr Baruah did not provide details about when his son was kidnapped. He broadly alluded to "an Indian conspiracy", but the rebel chief was not specific about who could have been behind it.

But his statement attacked some senior Ulfa leaders, who Mr Barua alleged, were now "throwing all ideals to the wind" and trying to start the negotiations with India.

Mr Barua has opposed negotiations, saying there could be no dialogue with India, unless the "issue of Assam's sovereignty" was on the agenda, something that the government refuses to accept.

A spokesman for the group's pro-negotiations faction, Mithinga Daimary, dismissed the reported kidnapping as "a fiction".

A large number of Ulfa leaders have been released from prisons in Assam after they promised to start a dialogue with India.

The group's chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, who was detained in Bangladesh last year and handed over to India, is also likely to be freed soon as the Assam government has not opposed his bail petitions.

Son kidnapped to force my surrender: ULFA chief

IANSFirst Published : 23 Dec 2010 04:35:44 PM ISTLast Updated :

GUWAHATI: The elusive commander-in-chief of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Paresh Baruah, Thursday claimed his teenaged son was kidnapped and held hostage to exert mental pressure on his family and to force him to surrender.

"My son has been kidnapped and then held hostage with the sole idea of putting mental pressure on us and then force us to surrender, or make us to dilute our stand and ideology for which we have been fighting," Paresh Baruah said in an e-mail statement received by IANS.

The ULFA leader, however, did not specify who or where from his son was kidnapped and held hostage.

According to Indian intelligence sources, Paresh Baruah's son Akash, 19, is a college student in Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

It is assumed Akash was kidnapped from Dhaka earlier this week, although no details are available so far.

"My son is not important or bigger than my people and the cause for which we are struggling. No one can make me or my family weak just because my son has been kidnapped, and let me tell you, we are prepared to sacrifice our son but at no cost I would waiver on my stand," the self-exiled ULFA commander-in-chief said.

Paresh Baruah is believed to be in hiding somewhere along the Myanmar-China border after he fled Bangladesh early 2008.

Intelligence agencies believe Paresh Baruah's wife and son are based in Dhaka under fake identities.

"My appeal now to all our leaders is to ensure that they don't compromise or surrender before the Indian government on the outfit's goal and ideology while opening peace talks," the ULFA leader said.

"We are not opposed to peace talks, but any such negotiations would have to be held as per our avowed ideologies."

Almost the entire ULFA leadership, including its chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, has been arrested in recent years and jailed, while the government is now freeing these leaders on bail to pave the way for peace talks. The outfit itself came under tremendous pressure to open the dialogue with the government after its premier strike force rebelled against violence and surrendered.

. . .
not surprising... they probably did kidnap him... i know even from nepal the intelligence agencies are known to kidnap suspected terrorists straight from kathmandu airport (with help and support from nepali intelligence).. even i think while back this one big name who used to run a media channel in nepal and was supposedly funded by ISI (cuz his channel used to be hugely anti-India).. he too was gunned down and assasinated.. people say by indian agents.. soo not surprising....

Even illegal acts?

yeaa ofcourse.. everything is legal for terrorists and intelligence agencies in this world...

.
well his son should be dealt with harshly...cos because of him many ppl have lost their sons, fathers, mothers, sisters etc.... so it is what he deserves... but for such inhumane a person.. it might not be a great thing...

Yes. Why not?

Nation comes first. Moreover, the act no longer remains illegal when sanctioned by the highest authorities.

OK if the highest authorities (the gov) in india sanctions the kiddnapping and murder of a innocent kid it's fine, right. Your ok with this right?

So india becomes a terrorist state, is what you want? Because kiddnapping and murder (of anyone who has not been convicted) even when sanctioned is a act of terror under international law.

Well no difference between the terrorists and india now.

Did I say he WAS murdered? Read the text fool, I said MAY BE, its illegal to kiddnap or harm a innocent person, regardless of who his father is. All my posts are reply to your compatriots, cheering the kiddnapping of a innocent kid. That includes you.

If the rebel leaders son abducted in bangladesh then its a shameful incident for us .we can not support this kind of state sponsor terrorist act any way. the crime commited by the rebel leader as claim by the india has no relation with his son .his son is most probably a college student here .

.
Its a tactic used by the Shin Bet. I think Barua called the bluff.
