Diamer-Bhasha Dam: Nawaz to personally monitor project, visit site soon

so basically pakistan has 60,000 of known sites for hydro.
with estinate of atleast another 40,000 of un identified sites.
for storage purposes even though kalabagh dam is an excellent project is not indispensable as some politicians think, there are other alternatives available which should be pursued without wasting further time.due to inability of political leadership to resolve the kalabagh dam dispute
govt should understand that storage dams(akhori though still produces 600 mw) are as important as multipurpose(bhasha) or pure run of river dams like dasu as pakistan is becoming water stressed country.

the real advantage that bhash provides is its ability to control water flow, silting into tarblea ghazi brotha and to be constructed dasu. this will enable pakistan to generate more power in winter from these dams. atleast 1.5 billlion units of additional power will be produced just at tarbela with bhasha dam construction. same amount of power will be available at dasu and ghazi brotha translating into a billion dollors of worth power without adding any new capacity

the northern pakistan has immense value in run off river projects(dasu-bunj etc) but there are few large storage sites(bhasha, patan, yalbo, skardu and thakot) that are identified which require extensive study and large constructive time due to large width of river and seismic activity and being remote.
therefore gov should consider storage dams that can be built quickly even though the power generation capacity may be limited from them.
then there is immense potential for wind projects at sindh wind corridor due to high sustainable wind speeds

I just wish Pakistan after building Bunji, Dasu and Basha by 2025. Start looking to build Katzarah dam to end all water problems once for all. It seem Tarbella dam life keep increasing, first it was till 2030, now 2060. After Basha it will last till 2085, and with Katzarah till 2135. some highlites here.

“The unique Katzarah dam is the only proposed storage that will provide food security, conserve 35MAF of water every year, generate 15,000MW of electricity, prevent silting of existing reservoirs, replenish 6.6 MAF of storage capacity lost to silting and end loadshedding and super floods,” said Engineer Fatehullah Khan Gundapur who headed the Indus River System Authority in the early 1990s.

Talking to Dawn, he said the proposed dam could increase the life of Diamer-Bhasha dam, irrigating the entire Kachhi (Sibi) plain of Balochistan from the Chashma barrage by gravity flow.

He said the proposed storage was unique in the sense that it had probably the narrowest dam site in the world with only 300 feet at the bed level compared with Kalabagh dam’s two miles long and Tarbela dam’s 8,000 feet long bed level. He said the project would function as watershed management dam by stopping silt erosion from the world’s highly erodible soil in the Skardu valley, thus prolonging the lifespan of Bhasha dam from 80 years to 800 years and extend lifespan of Tarbela by 50 years.

It was the tallest dam in the world, six times the storage of Diamer-Bhasha or Kalabagh dam and the third largest dam in the world after Aswan dam in Egypt and Three Gorges Dam in China.

Its 15,000MW of power generation capacity is the second largest in the world after the Three Gorges Dam and has over 1,000 years of life span.

Mr Gundapur said the proposed dam would also help implement para 2, 4, 6, and 14 (e) of the 1991 Water Accord by storing more water and end bitter provincial water dispute, resulting in non-implementation of the accord in full even after 20 years.

Govt urged to start work on Katzarah dam - DAWN.COM
