To me this city means to India what the city of Leningrad once meant for Soviet Russia for being the breeding ground of excellent poets, writers, painters, filmmakers,photographers and scientists. Once capital of India,Calcutta holds some of the finest academic establishments like the Asiatic Society and National library.

With a Hindu majority populace,the city have managed to remain as religiously neutral even when the entire neighborhood was bleeding with inter religious violence.To feel the vibes of the city,one have to come to the City and experience the fragrance of this old lady in which not only the Bengalis but the Anglo Indians,Punjabis,Gujratis,Marwaris,Afghans have mixed themselves unknowingly for the last four hundred years.

Bangladesh GDP with the new base year is $153.58 billion which is just 20 billion dollars more than what it was when using the existing 1995-96.

Both the cities look great in these pictures, however the ground reality is much different, both are dirty and are super congested, even by Indian standards.

On the ground, Dhaka is like a village on steroids, I would not even call it a city. It lacks public transport and the infrastructure is abysmal, but things will improve for Dhaka as the economy of Bangladesh grows.

Kolkata, despite being over two centuries old has the basic infrastructure in place. Wide roads(yes lane marking is almost non existant), footpaths(yes mostly encroached upon by small street food stalls), decent bus service( yes most of them are rickety buses), metro( expansion underway), convenient and cheap taxi service, well connected to the rest of India by railways(major railway hub), decent airport.

In my opinion it will be much easier to transoform Kolkata into a world class city than Dhaka. Dhaka, still has a long way to go, but in the future it might pull ahead of Kolkata.

Saltlake skyline is nothing special. Rajarhat newtown has a decent skyline, but it's a portion of Kolkata. On the other hand, dhaka has more dense skyline in areas like Motijheel, Karwan Bazar, Shanti Nagar and Gulshan-Banani area.

Metro Rail construction will start soon....but from what I understand the basic idea is to move the administration out of Dhaka to Purbacahal.Urbanization of suburbs near Dhaka is going on in full swing.Dhaka will move from Steroid to LSD in a couple of years.It will run its course pretty soon!

The total expenditure for constructing the nearly 20km metro rail line in the capital has been estimated at Tk220bn.

According to DTCA officials, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on September 3 gave its approval to appoint Nippon Koei as the consulting firm for the metro rail project.

The chosen consulting firm will prepare a detailed design, supervise the construction work and supply the equipment and rolling stocks for the project. It will also monitor and work to improve the management of the mass rapid transit system, they added.
