What's new

Dhaka to have 82 km long circular rails with 20 stations to cost around 8.5 billion usd

Too much passanger, unpredictable heavy weather (sometimes Lightning strikes electric lines, or flooding causing jammed and so on) and lack of number stations in outer Jakarta areas.

Dutch Electric railway system being abandoned by Japan occupier, most of systems had been raided for war time use and they prefer to using old but cheap steam locomotive. Fortunately, Dutch invader brought back the system and revive them in their short occupation of Jakarta, but not much left. After 1970 it was the revival of Electric railway in Indonesia

These issues are identical to what we will face. Weather for sure is similar to Jakarta, except in Wintertime. And population overload/infra difficulties are a given.

I also agree that they have to keep provision of expansion to multiple lines later. They always skimp on this then spend ten times the amount of money buying more land later. Laying track and roadbed is easy, acquiring land with eminent domain is not.

.
Now you see any news about it?

@bluesky
I have checked wiki. It says India has not yet introduced by definition any high-speed railway. Below is the excerpt:

"India does not have any railways that can be classified as high-speed rail (HSR) by international standards, i.e. railways with operational speeds exceeding 200 km/h (120 mph).[1] The current fastest train in India is the Train 18 (Vande Bharat Express) with a top speed of 180 km/h (110 mph),[2][3] which runs between New Delhi and Varanasi".

The newspaper report on the circular/loop railway line has not been supported with related information, such as will it be running at the (over)ground level (GL + 1.5m, for example), overhead level (GL + 8.0m) or underground.

This will be a commuter train to shuttle clockwise and anti-clockwise along two parallel tracks with a possible speed no more than 50 to 70kph because it has to make frequent stoppages. So, the weight of lines will be the same as other existing railways. Anyway, it is still just a newspaper report nothing substantive. I have read many tens of such news throughout 2018 and expecting the same in this year, too.

However, I hope either Japanese or Chinese companies build this train system.

I like the fact that the KRL is using re-conditioned Japanese JR rolling stock (if indeed this is the case). Good use of precious funds. But Indonesia has capability to build these rolling stock locally provided the Japanese supply the induction motors themselves (or maybe the know-how).

I thought its a fair prices for 80 km something long electric railway , considering they start to built from the scratch and even doesnt have core depo for heavy maintenance of their future electric railways lorries fleets and not even to mention the cost of other items and infrastructure like stations railways, electric lines, generator and other backing systems along with signal and transmision control .

@Nilgiri

Don't forget it's not on the ground. The entire 82km is overhead.

Cabinet body clears proposal for Dhaka circular train service
Special Correspondent
BR-logo1.jpg

The cabinet committee on purchase yesterday approved a proposal of the railway ministry to construct a circular railway around the Dhaka city under ‘Construction of Circular Railway Line around Dhaka City’ project under Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The approval was given at a meeting of the committee at the secretariat with the finance minister in the chair. The committee has also given approval to the ‘procurement guideline’ of the project, which will be implemented under a government to government (G to G) initiative in cooperation with the Japan government.

A total of $8500 million will be needed to implement the circular train network spanning 81.9km around the capital Dhaka, according to the proposal.

As per the proposal, the project aims at easing the traffic congestion of the capital and that about two crore city dwellers will be able to move smoothly inside the city.

According to the project plan, the 81.9km circular train network will have 20 stations at Tongi, Termuk, Purbachal, Beraid, Kayetpara, Demra, Siddhirganj, Chowdhury Bari, Chasara, Fatullah, Shyampur, Sadarghat, Babu Bazar, Nawabganj, Sankar, Gabtoli, Dhaka Zoo, Birulia, Uttara and Dheor.

Bangladesh Railway (BR) is the implementing agency for the project.

Chinese firm China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation has already completed a pre-feasibility study to implement the proposed circular rail route.

In order to ease the traffic movement of the city and reduce commuters’ dependency on bus and other vehicles, initiatives have been taken to set up ‘Circular Rail’ around the capital.
Bangladesh Railways has taken a project to construct around 81.9 kilometre long railway around the city. The project work will start in early 2019, sources said.
Railways Minister Mujibul Haque, in a recent parliamentary session, said the railway has a plan to construct rail tracks around Dhaka to reduce the traffic congestion. The feasibility study proposal for the project has been approved by the Planning Commission on December 27.
According to railways ministry, feasibility studies of the project have already been submitted on October 3 this year. The ministry will complete the feasibility study process by verifying all these reports. Then the field-level feasibility study will begin.
It has been learnt that the pre-feasibility study of the project has been done in 2014. But later project-related survey, preparation of design and other related work have not progressed in the last three years. As per latest news, the planning department has approved Tk 27 crore for feasibility study. Later, on September 19, the cabinet committee on purchase approved a proposal of the railway ministry to construct a circular railway around the Dhaka city under ‘Construction of Circular Railway Line around Dhaka City’ project under Public Private Partnership (PPP). The committee has also given approval to the ‘procurement guideline’ of the project, which will be implemented under a government to government (G to G) initiative in cooperation with the Japan government.

Later the railway ministry has appointed consultant for the project. For appointing consultant, an open tender was published on May 23. A total of 14 institutes have shown their interest of whom six were shortlisted and asked to submit their proposal immediately in the ministry concerned.
According to the proposal, a total of $8500 million will be needed to implement the elevated viaducts and double line standard gauge circular train network.
The Circular Railway network will have 20 stations at Tongi, Termuk, Purbachal, Beraid, Kayetpara, Demra, Siddhirganj, Chowdhury Bari, Chasara, Fatullah, Shyampur, Sadarghat, Babu Bazar, Nawabganj, Sankar, Gabtoli, Dhaka Zoo, Birulia, Uttara and Dhour.
The average distance between two stations would be 4.10km, while the highest distance would be 6km (Termuk-Purbachal Road) and the shortest distance to be 1.10 km (Sadarghat-Babubazar). The depot of the 81.9km circular railway network would be constructed at Demra and storage yard at Birulia.

Project director of Circular Railway Md. Monirul Islam Firozi told Bangladesh Post, work of circular railway is progressing fast. We will need one year to complete the feasibility study and three months more to complete the Development Project Proposals (DPP).
Then we will find donor agencies, once we get the donor agencies we will finally start our construction work. From that statistics it can said base work circular railway will start on 2020-2021- he added.

Thank you for clarifying the details about the Chinese project connection. I don't know whether the project is part of the $40 Billion China Govt. credit.

If the proposed railway uses meter gauge rail like the present Dhaka, Comilla and Narayanganj Chinese rolling stock, that is a downer for me (too small a capacity).

We need the new project based on broad-gauge track and much higher-capacity rolling-stock than at present. Some Bangladeshi posters have suggested in another thread that commuter rail be double-decker variety. I can assure you that in most larger urban centers in the US, most urban commuter rail is double-decker variety. Some of these double decker rolling stock used to be manufactured by Bombardier,

but are now being made by a factory owned by Hyundai Rotem. Here is a Hyundai Bi-Level commuter car in LA (MetroLink). Reportedly so comfortable and quiet, one can read or sleep on the train without noise-canceling headphones.
Hyundai_Rotem_Cab_Car.jpg

This is a Bi-level operated by New Jersey Transit in US for local commuter rail use between NYC and NJ.
NJ_Transit_Multilevel_7014_on_Train_6651.jpg

This is the excerpt of bi-level rail car use in China per wiki:

The first bilevel train for China Railways was built by Sifang in 1958 as Dongfeng diesel multiple unit, consisting of two locomotives and four bilevel coaches. After withdrawing Dongfeng DMU from use in 1982, China Railways redeveloped double-decker trains, the first of which rolled out from Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works in 1987 as SYZ25 and SRZ25.

The carriage designations of bilevel cars in China start with "S", abbreviating "double-decker" (双层; shuāngcéng) in Chinese. Current models of double decker trains include the 25B series (zh), 25Z series (zh) and 25K series (zh). Most bilevel cars in China were built by Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works, while some bilevel coaches were built by Changchun Railway Vehicles. The types of bilevel cars including bilevel hard seat (SYZ), bilevel soft seat (SRZ), bilevel hard sleeper (SYW), bilevel soft sleeper (SRW), Bilevel dining car (SCA) and bilevel soft seat-baggage combine car (SRZXL).

Bilevel coaches are mainly used for regional services in China, like KunmingDaliLijiang intercity trains in Yunnan and ShijiazhuangQinhuangdao express train in Hebei. Additionally, a cross-railway bureau double-deck train service is provided between Tianjin and Baoji (via Beijing West Railway Station).

By the way Nanjing, whose Bi-level car (older model) can be seen above, is the largest railcar manufacturer in the world by now and they have also supplied railcars to Mumbai and Noida metros.

The company is now known by its new name (CRRC) and they are also building bi-level railcars like Korean Hyundai in Massachusetts according to US Federal Railway safety and performance standards.

"SEPTA’s board is expected to award CRRC MA Corporation a $137.5 million contract (as of 3-17-2017) to build 45 bi-level railcars for Regional Rail. SEPTA picked the Chinese-owned company with a factory in Springfield, Mass., over bids from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem, which has a manufacturing plant in South Philadelphia, and Bombardier, a Canadian company with plants near Pittsburgh and Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Delivery of the cars would begin in October 2019. SEPTA will also hold an option for an additional 10 rail cars for another $23.5 million....................

CRRC MA is the U.S. arm of Chinese train manufacturer CSR Sifang, which only recently entered the American transit market. CRRC won its first American contract in 2014, a $566 million deal with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for 284 subway cars. As part of that deal, CRRC agreed to build a $95 million manufacturing plant in Springfield; that facility is set to open this year, and the first cars are scheduled for 2018. CRRC also won a $1.3 billion contract last spring to build 846 rails cars, which will be assembled at a Chicago facility for the Chicago Transit Authority. As in Philadelphia, CRRC dramatically underbid their competition in those cities: $226 million lower than Bombardier in Chicago, and $154 million lower than Hyundai Rotem in Boston."

This makes the initial batch of bi-level railcars for SEPTA about 3 Million apiece and the additional 10 about $2.35 Million apiece. For Bangladesh, these cars if built to similar standards, will cost a lot less, probably closer to $2 Million apiece. But then - we have not accounted for graft....:-)

Dhaka has one of the worst traffic jams in the world. Much needed!

they want to lower traffic.. .they gotta take out those rickshaws//// takes up more place than it carries passengers.... also why are trucks allowed to operate during day time/?

Both valid points.

That may be an older photo. I do not see a whole lot of Rickshaws in the main thoroughfares like Airport Road etc. nowadays.

Rickshaws are only present in the secondary roads and with newer commute options, they will go away fast.

The reason they are still hanging around is that we don't have footpaths (sidewalks) along all roads, and we Bengalis are generally too lazy to walk.

Not now, but the road transport system should be upgraded to a stage that the trucks can also run 24/7.

Not to mention that this line will serve a mega city of 15 million and many millions in the surrounding areas.

What posters outside BD do not realise is that the cost per passenger served is not really all that much more than other countries in the region.

Same. Let's look forward to the Bangladesh Tunnel Project.

The cost of railroad building in China is around 30-35 million USD per Km that is exclusive for the rail pavement. It's the cheapest in the world. If you add other things the price would be higher.
