Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud on Monday said the government will go to the international arbitration if it fails to realise the fair share of water from common rivers through talks with neighbouring countries, reports UNB.
“We want equity share of water from all the common rivers, including the Teesta. But before that we want to resolve the water problem through mutual discussions with India. If we fail to get the fair share through talks, we’ll go to the arbitration,” he told a seminar in the evening.
Anisul Islam said the government will do everything to realise the right share of water for the country.
Task Force on Water of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) organised the seminar on National Water Management Plan at IEB’s Old Bhaban.
About the country’s water problems, Anisul Islam said there is a plenty of water in the country but it is not available at the right time.
“There’s huge water in monsoon here, but we face water scarcity in the dry season. As the nature of the country’s rivers is different than that of others, it’s very difficult for us to mange water here.”
Stressing the need for dredging the country’s major rivers, the Water Resources Minister said about 1.5 billion tonnes of sediment fall in the Bay of Bengal through the rivers every year.
“We must dredge the rivers, but we’ll have to identify the locations of rivers that require dredging on priority basis, which is very expensive,” he added.
About restoration of the Buriganga River, Anisul Islam said the government has already taken a Tk 900-crore project to bring water from the Jamuna River to the Buriganga to revive it. — UNB
