What's new

Dhaka-Sylhet six-lane highway project starts in July

Sylhetis will oppose because ''autonomous Sylhet'' does not benefit them.
Because you say so?
They will overwhelmingly choose national unity and cohesion over regional separatism and isolationism.
LOL, we always choose what benefits us!
You Sylheti nationalists weirdos at first try to organize a street possession in Sylhet city center with just 100 people demanding 'autonomy' 'federation' and 'separate Sylheti language' then see where you stand. I am yet to seen any such street possession happening in Sylhet city since Bangladesh became independent even in once. This gave me the confidence of making previous statement. You weirdos are sweating over a issue whose demand do not even arise from Sylhet, let alone entering into public discussion or granting those!! PDF seems to attracting all kind of weird fatishist this days it seems.
Ah, if our thoughts and methods were like you we wouldn't be successful compared to other Bangladeshis.

And, sweating? LOL. I was casualty discussing with other fellow Sylheti. But, some outsider with inferiority complex started to play stronk games...

.
Im talking about autonomy not breaking Bangladesh!

We are paying Gucci price for Walmart Tshirt...

Well my close relatives from Sylhet (all from very educated privileged backgrounds) don't echo your sentiments to say the least. There are tons of highly placed Sylhetis in Bangladesh Govt. and private sectors. The current Foreign Minister is Sylheti, so was the previous Finance Minister. Sylhetis more or less run Bangladesh. Sylhetis fought in 1971 (General Muhammad Ataul Ghani Osmani).

I don't know what grievance Sylhetis would still have when they are at the top of everything in Bangladesh. No one in Bangladesh really cares.

Now if people from Bogra, Comilla and Mymensingh start asking for autonomy then where would we go?

Not saying you're wrong but I haven't seen this sort of sentiment in pretty much any Sylheti person I have met.

.
Also pure Democracy do not work as our founding father did not want majoritarian tyranny like it exists in India and the views @Homo Sapiens espouses. that is why our founding father created electoral college :

You views belong to fringe ideology that has no place in 21st century, those were ideologies of 1950’s where newly formed countries suppressed minorities languages, cultures to bring about ethnic homogenioty, glad times have changed and world has become more civilized, you can be from different ethnolingual bakgrdound than the majority of the population from any nation state, that doesn’t make you less Patriotic and less Bangladeshi. You do not define anything. Also your language and majority language of a nation state maybe widely used and be utilized in Administration more be more dominant, doesn’t mean other language who belong to minority groups are not as important, doesn’t mean those languages do not merit the same respect. You sound like a fringe ethnofascist which is also against Islamic virtues and humanity as well.

Wow with a straight face you are commending the electoral collage nonsense that allows a US president to get into power with several millions less vote than their opponent.

Dear god..... you are a strange fellow.....

Let us not call them "Sylheti weirdo". Just because one claim to be a Sylheti, doesn't make them one. If you get my drift.

As for Shanti Bahini, here is a reminder for all of us:
https://www.nytimes.com/1989/06/11/world/bangladeshi-insurgents-say-india-is-supporting-them.html

Now look at the patterns in these threads and look at how the so-called "resentments" get validations and instigations from individuals from our neighboring country. It is the same old game.

Birds of a feather flock together as they say....

Only a few people are fooled...

.
we Sylhetis are with Bangladesh because "we" choose to.

Let's discuss a bit about the choices that were available pre 1947.

Option-1: Be part of Bangladesh. A Muslim majority country that respects Sylhetis. Sylhetis are free to do as they please- speak their own language, do business and live a peaceful life.

Option-2: Become independent on its own. But remain completely landlocked between two countries, both of whom would want it as their part. Lack of cooperation with neighbors hindering its development.

Most likely be annexed by India within a few days of "Independence". Just like Sikkim.

Option-3: Join India and enjoy the wonderful rights that are available through the Hindutva bhakts.

I really don't see any choice there.

Then why oppose their god given language to be protected and preserved and be taught in both oral and written form in Sylhet Division in Bangladesh? Do you support Sylheti language to he gradually vanish, because it will if it is not proceed and preserved and not taught in both written and oral form in Sylhet Division in Bangladesh.

Sylhetis would remain part of Bangladesh, just because we joined that doesn’t mean our language and culture has to be erased by ethnofascism. Sylhetis are first and foremost proud Muslim. Being Bangladeshi doesn’t mean Sylhetis should lose their heritage, their language has to get recognized otherwise 3-4 generation from now on no one would even speak or know Sylheti language at all. They can be both proud Bangladeshi and retain their unique ethnolingual status in Bangladesh.

This is because GoB erroneously made it a dialed when Bangladesh was formed (Which is understandable as most newly formed nation around the world did it in 1950s, 1970s to make the society more homogenous and bring strong national identity, we are in 21st century and pluralism and endogenous linguistic heritage are respected and it is a great time now for their language to be protected and preserved) since most Sylhetis are proud and contributing citizens of Bangladesh) and and many many people were ashamed to speak in Sylheti I have met few Sylhetis who are ashamed to speak in Sylheti as well. This even highlights even more that Sylheti Language needs to get it recognizition to be practice and taught both written and oral form in Sylhet Division in Bangladesh. Many people parhaps from parts of the country also moved in, which is ok as it is part of the one country, if you really respect our language, what is your problem if Sylheti language recognized and protected and made co official language in Sylhet Bangladesh along with Bengali already is a official language. Bangladesheis from
other districts speak in various form and dialect of Bengali, only Sylheti is a separate language and not a dialect due it it’s historic origin and it’s written. US federalism would work best if it’s is implemented properly. Indian style and US has no comparison one is a beacon of hope for mankind and another one is majoritarian tyranny, racism, practices religious persecution and enable caste system bigotry. Anyway that is a whole another debate

Thankfully these views are changing lately and Sylheti language is slowly but surely gaining traction for official recognition in Sylhet Division in Bangladesh and no one can stop it. We make up 13% percent of Bangladeshi population, we are not a pushover, our rights and everything will be protected and preserved in our Bangladeshi nation. Any ethno fascist who wants to subjugate us in Bangladesh will not work and succeed.

That’s because pure democracies do not work watch the video and materials I have posted to comprehend. Pure democracies can also lead to majoritarian tyranny. This is why we have checks and balances.

Listen- nobody here is denying the rights of Sylhetis to speak in their own language.

There are active political movements in the CHT to recognize the tribal languages and make it available in school curriculum. It is supported by the mass and I wholeheartedly support that because they should be able to speak in their own mother tongue. They should not be forced to learn Bangla when they have their own language.

The problem we are having with you is your narrative. Not only have you been propagating oppression in the form of freedom of speech, but now you and your buddy here are also claiming discrimination in terms of resource extraction and how GOB is robbing "Sylhet's" wealth. You are peddling the idea of federalism in Bangladesh's context without any knowledge of Bangladesh's political climate.

What you are trying to sell here is resentment. Trying to create a problem where there is none. You are constantly promoting regionalism over nationalism in an attempt to create discord among Bangladeshis. That is what is our problem is with you.

Can you point me to one respected academic study demonstrating the majority of Sylhetis wanting to add Sylheti language to their academic curriculum and used for official purposes? Can you point me to an active political movement by the majority of Sylhetis to make Sylheti an official language?

I mean a major mass movement based in Bangladesh. Not a fringe group with the likes of yourselves at the helm.

If you can produce something like that, I will be interested to hear you out. If you cannot, it is better you sell your hate somewhere else.

PS:

To add to my list of questions for you- for the last 20+ years, Bangladesh has been appointing a Sylheti in key ministerial positions like Finance ministry. From Saifur Rahman in BNP to Shah Kibria and Abul Mal Abdul Muhit in BAL- were all Sylhetis. Despite having such a close position to the PM of Bangladesh, why haven't they pushed the issue?

The answer is- because it is a non-issue. It is only an issue for individuals with a hidden agenda to use language as a means of achieving an ulterior motive.

The answer is- because it is a non-issue. It is only an issue for individuals with a hidden agenda to use language as a means of achieving an ulterior motive.
It is because they don’t see the importance of language being preserved but it will change as they are realizing it, Bangladesh does have other pressing issues at the momentC but it will slowly be demanded as more and more Sylhetis like myself are being aware of our linguistic heritage as well. Chakmas language should be protected but they should also be taught in Bengali as well as they are part of Bangladeshi citizens, Nation state can have multiples languages.
No one is disputing Sylheti are discriminated, Sylhetis are not discriminated in Bangladesh at all, it is not a issue of discrimination as Sylhetis are fully fledged and productive citizens of Bangladesh. But issue starts with you ethno fascist would only love us as long as we will only use Bengali and as long as will only learn Bangla, which we should it is lingua Franca of Bangladesh and we need to learn it there is no dispute about it, but it arises when we actually demand to make Sylheti Language a co-official language of Sylhet Division only in Bangladesh along with Bengali, only then to your ethno facist mindsets we become people with hidden agenda, how many times I have to repeat and restate myself, this is nothing to do with separatism and regionalism, it is had to do with saving our language in Sylhet division from gradual extinction, can you not comprehend this simple logic?, if a language isn’t practice in its written and oral form dominant language will make it extinct, therefore it is very important for the language to get recognition and be taught to Sylheti kids along with a Bengali, in Sylhet Division in Bangladesh there is no hidden agenda, there is no such a ulterior motive maybe you ethno facist don’t want it happen so you’re trying to make it issue by falsely claiming it is something else. It seems you only want us to Speak and learn bangla and not also learn our mother tongue Sylheti along with Bengali in School in Sylhet Division only in Bangladesh.

Lastly chakmas are also Bangladeshi citizens their culture should be respected but they should also learn Bengali and they make up neglible percent of Bangladeshi population, citizens unlike we Sylheti Bangladeshis which is about 14 percent of Bangladeshi population.

It will
happen like that as well.

Some people here are insane.

And others are nefarious.

Why are we even talking about this?

.
While it is not happening now but it is slowly gaining ground and more and more Sylheti people in Bangladesh are realizing and being aware of their unique ethno-lingual Sylheti heritage in Bangladesh. It will happen gradually.

Understand that most of your views belong to outdated 19th century, not 21st century, in 21st century, a region within one national political union (in one national identity) can have multiple official languages, that doesn’t make them less patriotic, less Bangladeshi. These views do not belong in 21st century.

Federalize the country with modified US system. I love the british westminster system, but it is not a good fit for Bangladeshi political culture!
Not saying you're wrong but I haven't seen this sort of sentiment in pretty much any Sylheti person I have met.
Well, at least you're not attacking me with stronk language and fuked up logic like other emotional Bangladeshis.

Unlike my other fellow Sylhetis Im more politically conscious. I can clearly see we are being ripped off by GoB and this injustice needs to stop...

You don't see because your ancestors didn't had any. Some elites decided your fate mate.

You should research how much political effort and propaganda Muslim leaders had to do just to make Sylhet a part of Pakistan.

And had that not been the case, you would now been accused as "illegal Bangladeshis" and made to prove your Indian citizenship by your khaki half pant wearing RSS brethren.

It is You who should be thankful for what Bhashani did for the Muslims in this region.

Most of our history we did made right decisions. We are good aren't we?

US so called checks and balances surely have comprehensively failed the moment bush assumed power despite less vote than Gore and US became a laughing stock when trump took power with several millions of votes less than clinton.

As i said before you are failing to put forward any arguments that hold together. Sylheti elites are part of BD elite who you say dont care or lack knowledge about your culture. Very interesting .... some might say they prioritise issues based on importance.

Anyhow best of luck...you seem to have a lot of free time.

If Sylhet was part of India now, RSS thugs would have been your fellow loving countrymen, no? Hence, Brethren.

I will leave you be with your ego-boosting and feel victimized thoughts.

Adios...
