Dhaka seeks rice, land concessions
from Phnom Penh
New Age Desk

Bangladesh is seeking to purchase 2,00,000 tonnes of Cambodia痴 rice and has requested economic land concessions, according to Cambodian foreign minister Hor Namhong, the Phnom Penh Post reported on Monday.

After the meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Dipu Moni on Monday, Hor Namhong told reporters the government of Bangladesh saw its food shortage problem as a first priority. Consequently, it has asked to purchase roughly 2,00,000 tonnes of rice as soon as possible.

In turn, Cambodia requested more investment from Bangladesh to process rice domestically.

We have a rice surplus although Cambodia does not have the rice mills to process it so we want Bangladesh to invest in rice mills. Because we do not have the rice mills our farmers sell their rice to Vietnam and Thailand,・he said.

Thailand and Vietnam are the world痴 two largest rice exporters.
Last week the Bangladesh Directorate General of Food released a tender on its website seeking to import 50,000 tonnes of white rice to help its domestic shortage. It gave bidders until January 3 to submit offers.

Hor Namhong said Bangladesh wanted to invest in growing rice in Cambodia for future exports back to Bangladesh, requested long-term land leases for up to 99 years, such as Cambodia had already granted to other countries.

The two countries would work towards an agreement to improve the bilateral trade and investment relationship which was now quite small, he said.

Bangladesh痴 foreign minister痴 two-day visit, which ends Tuesday, is the first state visit from Bangladesh since 2001.

She has also met the Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen and the minister of agriculture, Chan Sarun, for further discussions about agricultural projects.

Cambodia痴 national rice policy includes an aim to reach 1 million tonnes of milled rice exports by 2015.

Laos and Cambodia are two different nations bro...looks like you talking about Cambodia, not the other one....

Anyways, good news though....

Cheers!!!

that would make politicians of BD more lazy.

BD has it's own land that can be used for growing rice. than why import from other nations?

Sorry! It was a mistake to place the name of Laos instead of Cambodia. The thread title should be " Dhaka Seeks to Lease Farmland in Cambodia". Sorry for the inadvertent mistake.

I have corrected the mistake.

I think, BD is taking appropriate step by engaging the govt of Cambodia to sell rice and lease farmland. It is good to see BD is trying to strengthnening and diversify its diplomatic relationship. For many years India has been selling us cotton, rice and wheat. But, lately internal demands for these goods are increasing in India.

BD is trying to purchase cotton from central Africa and central Asia, and is to buy food from and lease land in Cambodia. Food security must be established to feed our expanding population and to support our higher standard of living.

Just imagine 150 million plus people eating full everyday one day... Especially with Bangladesh's industrialization, farmland's going to become scarce.
A good strategic move, though, in the future, only agricultural research/study like the various 'Green Revolutions' will truly provide food safety for some of the most populous nations of the world.

Good decision by BD to take farm land on lease outside.

Pray that our Govt gets the clue and buy some instead of selling own to Gulf Countries

It is kind of surprising that Bangladesh has insignificant ties wit the ASEAN nations....apart from vietnam and thailand, we do not have much co-operation with these countris as laos or cambodia....

BD should seek more opportunities economically in these nations....if i am not wrong, they fall in the LDC category and we can attempt to market our products there, given they mainly survive on imports....

Given this leasing issue is a good stride regarding economic cooperation, i would like to further exports to these countries....

Cheers!!!

I suggest brother Bangladesh to buy land in Africa as its dirt cheap with water and cheap labor as India is also buying millions of acre there.
