Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader has said that the alignment and the designs of 16 stations for the Metrorail have been finalised.

He was speaking to reporters after inspecting roads in Moghbazar on Thursday.

“Today we’ve finalised the alignment and the designs of 16 stations for the Metrorail. The physical work will begin from early 2015,” he said.

Additional project director Mahbubul Alam told bdnews24.com the places though which the electric train would pass turn was called ‘alignment’.

“The 16 stations will be built on the same design but their sizes may be different,” he said.

The cabinet approved a law related to land acquisition for the Metrorail on principle on April 28.

ECNEC approved the project in 2012.

The route will start from Uttara Third Phase and go to Pallabi; from there through Rokeya Sarani (west) to Khamarbari and Farmgate; then past Hotel Sonargaon and Shahbagh to turn at TSC and head to Bangladesh Bank past Doel Chattar and Topkhana Road.

The 16 Metrorail stations will be Uttara (North), Uttara (Centre), Uttara (South), Pallabi, IMT, Mirpur 10, Kazipara, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doel Chattar, National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank.

The high-speed railway?
I do not think metrorail trains will run high speed because it will be used for carrying commuter/passengers in and around the Dhaka City, and will be operated by electricity. I expect about 60km/hr speed only for this commuter train.

As shown in the map above there will be three lines, namely MRT-4, MRT-5 and MRT-6. Japan's JICA has very painstakingly did the route survey works for a long time and finally has decided about the routes in consultation with the rly authority in Dhaka.

As far as know, MRT-1, MRT-2 and MRT-3 are all bus routes. I only hope JICA will bring about its experience with Tokyo metro and Osaka city railway management system and introduce the same in Dhaka MRT.

Tokyo has earmarked $2.8 billion for the 1st phase or MRT-6 project.

Why don't you choose our China technology, we Chinese railway technology is a world class.

The Japanese gov agency JICA is helping to finance this project so the contract will go to them. I think China will be busy on other multiple projects including ports, roads, etc with a lot more to come.

The new airport looks to be back on the table, just have to find a adequate location, then there are talks of revamping the rail, especially to Chittagong and the new port.

Why don't you choose our China technology, we Chinese railway technology is a world class.

China will be building the first underwater expressway tunnel of South Asia in Chittagong.

Construction work of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)-6, known as metro rail, will start one year ahead of the previous schedule as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) wants to disburse Tk130 billion ($400m) next year for the project, Finance minister AMA Muhith has said.

“Since we are getting the Jica fund, we’ll be able to start metro rail project in 2014 instead of 2015,” he said after the meeting of cabinet committee on public purchase on Monday.

The committee approved the communication ministry’s proposal for appointment of a consultant for the Tk220 billion project.

A consortium of six local and international firms, led by Nippon Koei Construction Company of Japan, gets the Tk9.5 billion consultancy work. It comprises Nippon Koei India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation India , Mott MacDonald UK and Mott MacDonald India and Bangladesh company Development Design Consultant.

Sources in the ministry said the Jica offered to divert the amount it had pledged for the Padma bridge project to the metro jail scheme.

“The MRT-6 will be completed within four years,” the finance minister said.

The cabinet committee also approved the Election Commission’s proposal for appointment of a strategic firm for the Tk143.7m smart card project.

Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP), a local non-government organisation, has been chosen as the strategic communications approach firm, with consent from the World Bank.

I read somewhere only the consulting job has been awarded to Nippon Koei India. It or a group of companies led by it will do the quantity survey and prepare tender documents for bidding. Only after this stage, a number of contractors will be selected to do various categories of works.

Yes, Nippon Koei is the chief consultant, so we are surely using the Japanese tech as well as Japanese experience for the project.

The main construction work done by a Japanese company should be the best way to get the works done perfectly and timely. However, it may not happen the way we all want because the engineering team from Japan will be very costly.

This may be the reason why Nippon Koei INDIA has been selected instead of Nippon Koei JAPAN as the main Consultant. Among various works, the job of a Consultant company requires it to draft the basic drawings, based on which design and construction drawings will be prepared. Nippon Koei India's Indian engineers should have good knowledge about their jobs because they must have done similar works in Indian projects.

Another important point is the transfer of railway management, operation and maintenance know how JICA will introduce and then transfer to the local management group. But, considering the mindset of our people I am not optimistic about this important matter.

like any other multinational company .. nippon koel has subsidiaries in many places..
if bangladesh was near mozambique, you would have dealth with mozambique office because that comes under remit of that office..
if you go to their website you can see which area comes under which office..
the cost of operation is obviously cheaper in India.. or hanoi or mozambique.. not really sure they will pass on part of profit to client though.

When the minister was talking about sixteen stations in the first phase he may have been talking about the MRT 4 phase. MRT 6 has about twelve stations.
