The inauguration of the first metro rail in Bangladesh is planned for 2024, but through special arrangements made by the government, it is expected to be inaugurated by December 2019.

The implementation agency working behind Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL), is working day and night—to unveil the Uttara-Agargaon section of the metro rail project. Its slogan is, “Moving people, saving time and energy.”

The works on the rest of the route, that runs from Agargaon to Motijheel, will be completed by December 2020, ahead of schedule.

Once the metro rail is complete, it will be the most: time-efficient, reliable, safe, comfortable and environment-friendly solution. It will transform Dhaka into a more active, commute-friendly, and sustainable city.

“The project is progressing smoothly. MRT Line-6 is being constructed to make life easier for everyone in Dhaka. It will run all the way from Uttara to Motijheel, covering a distance of 20km, with 16 stations along the way,” said MAN Siddique, managing director, DMTCL.

The first span of the metro rail was installed between two pillars at the starting point of the project in Diyabari, Uttara, at the beginning of April this year. The second span will be installed at Agargaon, shortly. A total of 770 spans will be set along the 20.1km route.

During a recent visit, the reporter found that the construction work of metro rail is progressing rapidly—as a fast track project to mitigate Dhaka’s immense traffic.

A barrier is being used to prevent road accidents on the project site. There are barbed wire fences for added protection. Passengers and pedestrians can move safely beside the project area at Rokeya Sarani and Pallabi.

A metro rail official said that people will get metro services from next year, and that a massive drive is in operation to implement the entire project by 2020.

Around 60,000 passengers will be able to move, in an hour, using the metro rail. In 2021, an estimated 500,000 people will commute by MRT Line-6 every day,” officials said.

According a DMTCL official, to maintain and use MRT Line-6 properly, an international-standard rolling stock will be deployed. The line will feature 24 sets of trains, and each set, initially, will consist of six cars—with a plan to expand them to eight cars per set in the future.

On average, the viaduct of MRT Line-6 will be 10.4m high. In order to reduce vibration and noise, Floating Slab Track (FLS), Continuous Welded Rails (CWR), and Noise Barrier walls will be installed wherever necessary, the official added.

. . . .
Floating Slab Track (FLS)
Dhaka is a city of noise. An additional noise will be created by the transport of the Metro trains. However, the FLS system whereby the steel tracks are fastened directly to the concrete slab, without placing stone ballasts on it, will reduce the sound and noise during the movements of trains. Read below from the Internet source:

Benefits of slab track

Slab track offers the following advantages over traditional ballasted track:
  • Very low maintenance requirements
  • Shallow construction depth
  • Reduced dead load
  • Reduced structure gauge
  • Higher speed operation
  • Engineered noise and vibration performance
  • Long design life
  • Increased reliability
  • Increased availability
  • Low whole-life cost
  • A sustainable solution

The city dwellers are going to get the first-ever underground metro rail service from Hazrat Shahjalal Airport to Kamlapur by the year 2026 that will ease traffic congestion to a great extent with a view to transport a large number of commuters.

The planned underground metro rail route will connect Purbachal Kanchan Bridge and Khilkhet point of the airport with the Kamalapur alignment . This 26.6-kilometre metro rail will be the country’s second metro rail service in the capital to be constructed at a cost of Tk 39,000 crore. According to the plan, this metro rail will be completed by the year 2025 and is expected to ease the traffic situation significantly in the metropolitan city of Dhaka. However, the first metro rail service from Uttara to Motijheel will be opened for the commuters by 2020 to ease traffic congestion in the capital. In the second phase, the Uttara to Agargoan intersection of the metro rail will be opened for the citizens by 2019. “We are aiming to complete construction of the planned second metro rail service, which will be the first underground rail network in Bangladesh, by 2026,” M A N Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) told Bangladesh Post on Thursday. He said the underground rail service will be opened for commuters to ease the traffic congestion in the capital. The first part of the project, a 16.4 kilometres underground tunnel, will be constructed from Dhaka Airport to Kamlapur via Khilkhet, Kuril, Jamuna Future Park, Badda, Rampura-Malibagh and Rajarbagh.

According to the proposal, stoppages will be built at Kamalapur, Rajarbagh, Malibagh, Rampura, Hatirjheel, Badda, Uttar Badda, Natun Bazar, Jamuna Future Park, Khilkhet, Airport, Bashundhara Residential Area, Mustul, Purbachal West, Pubachal Central and Purbachal. As per deal, the feasibility study of the project, conducted by the Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) under the supervision of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), will be completed by this year. JICA has been working on the feasibility study and preparing the detailed design of the second metro rail. We hope it would be completed soon, DTCA Executive Director Syed Ahmed told Bangladesh Post. “We will then sign a deal with JICA for funding,” he said, adding that modern technologies made underground tunnel construction work easier for the country’s first ever underground metro rail service. According to the DTCA plan, JICA will also complete detailed design within the stipulated time frame.. The feasibility study and detailed design will be completed by December 2018 at a cost of Tk 4,736 crore. JICA has agreed to finance the project at 0.01% interest rate payable in a period of 40 years, sources said. The Pre-Evaluation Committee meeting on the proposed project has already been held where the Planning Commission has recommended for considering the project by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council subject to fulfillment of some conditions.
