Dhaka metro construction finally begins tomorrow

I think i was talking about upcoming dhaka elevated expressway which will cost 1.7B USD for 21KM elevated while 26KM complimentary roads.
It is a ppp project supposed to be inaugurated back in 2014.It's cost was decided to be around 1 billion dollar with 73 percent funding coming from Ital-Thai company which got the project.But that company could not secure it's funding in the last 6 years.In the mean time project cost shoot up to 53 percent, half of that increases related to higher land acquisition cost.Several acres of that land have to be secure by demolishing many multistoried building(this is what happen when urban center allowed to grow in unplanned manner.)So compensation is astronomically high(Dhaka's land price is higher than London city center!).

Govt. now in a limbo, they can't scarp the deal as it will open a lot of legal proceeding before which no new tender can be submitted. So it will push the entire project at least 10 years into future.Now Ital-Thai is pledging to secure funding within 6 months.Let's see what happen.To date only 7 percent work have done.You can say that it was a very bad decision to give the work to that scam company.

Do your own math the purchasing cost of land for a 21 km road with a 100m RoW (Right of Way). It is more than 48,200 decimal or about 30,000 Katha of land in the heart of Dhaka. A Katha may cost more than Tk1,00,000/- or $13,500 per Katha. So, the land cost itself is 30,000 Katha x $13,500 = $400 million or more.

Now, calculate other special costs in a rain-soaked country where half an hour of rainfall accumulates knee deep water. Do not you think the construction will involve thousands of tonnes of diesel to pump out the water from the excavation for the foundations? Do you need this money in your desert City called Karachi? There are hundred other construction hurdles that must be overcome requiring time and money.

These are only few reasons why road/expressway construction is expensive comparing to other desert countries in our west.

Kawasaki Heavy, Mitsubishi to supply train cars for Dhaka project

Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corp. have won a ¥40 billion order from a Bangladesh state-owned company to supply 144 train cars and maintenance depot equipment for the country’s first rapid transit railway system.

The state-run Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Co. is now building the MRT Line-6 to help ease chronic traffic congestion in the Bangladesh capital, one of the most crowded cities in the world, the two Japanese companies said. Dhaka has a population of over 15 million


The 20-km fully elevated route will connect the northern and southern parts of Dhaka. The construction is being financed by yen loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Kawasaki will be responsible for a range of matters from design, production and supply of train cars and major depot equipment to training operation and maintenance personnel at the Bangladesh company. Mitsubishi will manage commercial administration and partially supply depot equipment.

The seven Japanese civilians killed by terrorists at a restaurant in Dhaka in July 2016 were engaged in a feasibility study regarding the mass rapid transit project when the attack occurred.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi win $360m Dhaka metro rolling stock contract

Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi have secured a contract worth nearly JPY40bn ($360m) to supply 144 cars of rolling stock and maintenance depot equipment for Dhaka mass rapid transit (MRT) Line-6 in Bangladesh.

The contract was signed with the Government of Bangladesh-owned Dhaka Mass Transit Company (DMTCL).

The contracted rolling stock includes 24 six-car trainsets, which will be built using lightweight and durable stainless steel.

The trains will be equipped with internal and external CCTV cameras to ensure passenger security, and two sets of large capacity air-conditioning units to provide comfort for commuters during the hot and humid season in Dhaka.

Anyone have any comparative costs? Maybe the Indians posting in this thread...

Yea you're even worse you're an LDC like Somalia.

They will probably start graduating from LDC from next year actually...they met 1 out of 3 indices already...and very close on remaining 2...and you only need meet 2 out of 3 to start graduating...which has 3 year period I believe. 2021 may very well be the year BD loses LDC classification....but it may actually hurt them more than help them.
