Dhaka, Dec 15 (IANS) Bangladesh's largest Islamist party, the Jamaat-e-Islami - facing charges of targeting unarmed civilians during the 1971 war - has now accused India of killing a score of academics 39 years ago, a day before the country celebrates its Bijoy Divas (Liberation Day).

The charge by Jamaat-e-Islami leaders came on the day the country paid homage to a group of Dhaka University teachers and artists who were pulled out of their homes and killed on the night of Dec 14, 1971.

This act was allegedly carried out by Pakistan Army personnel with the help of Islamist militia - Al Badr, Al Shams and Razakars.

The joint command of Indian and Bangladeshi forces secured the surrender of the Pakistan Army's 93,000 men Dec 16, 1971, ending a 14-day military campaign in the then eastern Pakistan.

'The intellectuals had stayed in the country till December 14, 1971, as they felt safe here. They were against a war being fought from India. That big power realised that they won't become its agents,' Jamaat's acting secretary general A.T.M. Azharul Islam said.

'So, it cannot be said that the big power (India) was not behind the killings of the intellectuals as the trial for the crimes was not held,' the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

Jamaat held a discussion at its party office, while thousands of people paid tributes at the Martyred Intellectuals' Memorial in Mirpur and the Rayerbazar Mausoleum in the national capital.

The top brass of the Jamaat, which had opposed Bangladesh's liberation, is now in jail and facing trial for 'war crimes' by an International War Crimes Tribunal set up by the present Sheikh Hasina government.

The government Wednesday moved the tribunal to issue arrest warrant against Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, a senior leader of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accused of organising killings of academics and minority Hindus in 1971.

Chowdhury, who leads an Islamist group within the BNP, is considered close to party chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

Hasina alleged at a rally Tuesday - organised to remember the killed intellectuals - that Zia was 'in league' with the Islamists as she had lent support to a strike call Dec 26 by the Sammilita Olama Mashayekh Parishad, a body of Muslim clergy.

zahir raihans dead maybe someway related to india as he had prove of our leaders activities in kolkata but the killing of intellectuals were a weird activity as that time pak army were on verge of defeat so how could they think about killing the intellectuals ? and indian troupes entered bangladesh in 16 December so how could they also involved in 14th december killing a really confusing situation indeed.:undecided:

The reactionary force will always try to create confusion among the society only to gain from it. Jamat declared that they were the freedom fighter and
Kobir Chowdury was the only Rajakar in Bangladesh in 1971. Now take it...

hahahahahahahahah

.
jamatis declaring that they were freedom fighters ? AAA......are they .....? ok than I guess my uncles who fought in the war were playing video games back then right? Bloody liars.

Please do not divert the fact here. What Jamati said is that If kobir Chowdury can be a freedom fighter while working at the Bangla academy during the 71 conflicts then Jamati also a freedom fighter. To me neither Jamati nor so called Awami intellectual were freedom fighter. Hisab barabar :coffee:

You and I both know that any one support Awami become automatically freedom fighter. Jamatis are targeted and being executed now a days because it has formed alliance with Awamis rival BNP. ;)

Funny how what they are saying are being distorted. One thing has to be mentioned: it was most of BNP mp's and leaders who fought in the civil war. The awami mps were hiding in India during the war. Many people has even claimed they were enjoying night life in india whilst the war was going on. It was ziaur rahman and his crew who took up arms and fought like a man. Yes, some awami leaders were freedom fighters, no doubt, but it was bnp leaders who dedicated the most out of two. And, it was the so called mujib killers who fought like brave men and contributed the most. No one can deny the fact mujib killers put more on the line than most awami league leaders.

Bengali academia played vital part in Pakistani education, institutions and military. Hence targeting them under false flag operations sealed the deal for anti-Pakistan sentiments in east. Once can guess the supposedly involved without benching too much brain power.

Bangladesh was bound to separate politically due to growing differences owing to different geo-political spheres. The demand of autonomy were much focused on such rights. India just like its typical opportunism jumped into the for quest of its hegemonic ambitions and supported dubious culprits like Mujeeb which were discredited by its own people..hence the rise of Mujeeb killer squad..

Had it not been for Indian intervention through cover terrorism, Pakistani army would not enter into panic mode and resort to violence against unarmed civilians. Hence a great deal of life would be saved but when can India let an opportunity of defaming Pakistan pass by without availing benefit??

imagine a billion population crazy over the concept to occupy pakistan again and invading a pity territory of the east fully sorrunded by india, and imagine the indian barbarians waiting to take advantage of the occupation, plunder loot, rape crimes against bengalis, even today bengalis are paying for the past invasion, god save bangladesh against 1 billion savages across the border, just waiting waiting to unleast their brutality once again..

India plotted intellectuals' murder Jamaat claims again

Staff Correspondent

Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday echoed the acting party secretary general's comment that the Indian army had plotted the murders of Bangladesh's intellectuals on December 14, 1971.

Acting chief of Jamaat Maqbul Ahmad repeated the claim yesterday at a discussion in the city in observance of the Victory Day.

Besides, acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam said at the discussion the then "elected chairmen" from Awami League, and not Jamaat, formed "Razakar" and "peace committees" in '71.

Earlier at a discussion on Tuesday, he alleged that the murders of intellectuals were plotted by the Indian army.

But the following day, the party in a rejoinder to his reported speech said the reports distorted his speech.

“A brigadier of Indian army was with Zahir Raihan (film maker) when he went out of home. There were many documents with him [Zahir] on what many Awami League leaders did when they stayed in India during the Liberation War,” Maqbul said quoting the wife of Zahir.

He however did not give details.

“Abusive words like Rajakar, Al-Badr were being used against us every year when martyred intellectuals day and Victory Day are observed. But real information in this regard is surfacing gradually,” Maqbul said.

Acting chief of city Jamaat and lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad alleged that the Awami League leaders who stayed in India during the Liberation War were "agents" of that country.

Jamaat collaborated with the Pakistani occupation forces during the Liberation War.

I don't know from where such psychotic ideas arise . India won the war against you guys. So they could have occupied the territory. We don't want any one's land. Is there even a logic behind your rhetoric? Why would someone want to occupy an over populated land and with no natural resources? The world knows who plundered, looted and raped the Bengalis.

It's even funnier when Awami dalals play defensive politics while BNP offensive. BNP needs developed some gut and tell the way it is. I am sick and tired of BNP's cowardly behaviors. Why aren't this idiot don't understand the fact that mass population behind them.

BNP and all nationalist forces needs to take the matter on their own hand and forced them Awami munafiq dalals from land musalman.

No matter how discreditable jamat e islami is for its foolish political stands they cannot be suspected of murdering civilians in cold blood..infact jamat e islami is one of those hippies who advocate mercy for all even traitors..there are serious flaws in this conspiracy..lies have no root and sooner they will be exposed.

No offense but the culture of India has a history of lying and deceit for material gains..its like way of life..not remorse..and history or habits do not change ever.

East Pakistan invasion cannot be defined as war by any respectable army...it was covert terrorism of communist legacy at best..India did not occupy the land is not a valid excuse..remember India was incapable to occupy any land because that would expose the indian hegemonic ambitions as well its hand in east-Pakistan uprising and get the world body involved. Perhaps UNSC sanctions as well. The communist take over by Indra wasn't going all that smooth an a scape goat was needed to divert attention..secondly pro-west capitalist and growing Pakistan did not sit well with backward leadership of India which wanted to attain hegemonic position and force their backwardness on everyone. India was not even in position to defend itself in case of Pakistani retaliation hence their best ally soviet union were called to blockade Pakistan Navy. First the RAW agents spread fear by terrorism and killing of high value civilians under false flag operations which in turn created a mass influx of refugees used as an excuse to invade East Pakistan. Every Bengali knows what the Indian army did upon their return from newly born Bangladesh. Looted and plundered every piece of metallic and valuable possession. The special indian interest into east-Pakistan can be traced back to the roots of Pakistan movements. Hindu Muslim tension have been at their epic in the Bengal areas hence the movement for separate Muslim homeland first surfaced there. The several million Hindus of East-Pakistan were highly sympathetic to India and envious of Pakistan and played a vital role in this tragic event.

Due to Indian intervention, PA found itself surrounded in an unfamilar hostile terrioty and it became a do or die affair..inflict maximum damage because the indian armed terrorist were on the rampage as well..the confused situation and volunteer nature of mukthi bahni much like the today Taliban meant that every able person was a potential recruit and at times of war you cant do much but neutralize the potential.

My mom had a set of urdu language digest which carried a serial article though incomple written by a Pakistani intelligence officer station in Dhaka who managed to witness the events first hand and remain under cover for next couple of years in Bangladesh. Until the ties normalized and he was able to make safe return to Pakistan. I assume he must be a famous figure so will appreciate if someone can recall..We only had few digests of the series so I only read part of the serial..the digests were dated 1983-1984 as far I remember.
