People reject defence MoUs with India: BNP
A senior BNP leader has claimed the country's people have turned down the defence MoUs signed between Bangladesh and India on Saturday, reports UNB.
"The country's people have no consent to the MoUs on defence, and they won't allow those to be implemented. We'll set up our security system in our own style," said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He made the comments while speaking at a human chain programme, organised by Bangladesh Jatiya Dal in front of the National Press Club in the city on Sunday, demanding the government ensure fair share of water of 54 common rivers.
The BNP leader also alleged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed the MoUs on defence adopting a knee-jerk policy to appease India.
Bangladesh and India on Saturday signed 36 bilateral documents, covering diverse areas of cooperation, including economic and defence cooperation, power and peaceful use of nuclear energy, after official talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Rizvi alleged India has forced the government to ink the defence MoUs to establish its control over Bangladesh's security system. "April 08 will be considered as a black day in Bangladesh history as the MoUs were signed on the day."
He also said India has signed the MoUs with a particular political party of Bangladesh to keep it in power forever. "This agreement is with a party which has no popularity."
The BNP leader warned the government that the country's people may launch a democratic movement at anytime as they are vexed at its misrule, misdeeds and undemocratic attitude.
